RE: how high???

Like most hunters, I hunt from a treestand to help keep the deer from seeing movement and more importantly, keeping my nasty, human scent above the deer's nose.
In most situations, 18-22 feet should do it.

I usually go up 15-20 feet, but the most important thing to consider is the cover around you. I would go up only as high as you have to in order to be the most camoflauged. As one person already mentioned, when you hunt near a ridge, even if you go 30 feet up in your tree, you still may be at the same line of sight of a deer on the ridge. That's why I would go to the height that blocks your outline the best.

RE: how high???

15' - 25' as a rule of thumb. Sometimes higher/lower depending upon terrain, canopy below and available trees. I have gone as high as about 30' and set up as low as about 10'. So - average is about 20".

As already mentioned, playing the wind is a huge key. Also when using a ladder, lock-on or climber, try not to silhouette yourself. Having "back cover" really helps you stay concealed.

As for me, I'd rather be 30 feet away that is to avoid deers from seeing any movements. With this far also I can properly prepare for bowing the dear.

15 ft is a good average for me

RE: how high???

Looks to me it's all about the wind currents in the ridges and the concealment thing. If you are concealed at 5ft. off the ground and the deer don't see or smell you, and you are able to make a good shot that's what you are looking for. Every situation is different. You never really know how high you need to be. The deer you shot when you were 30ft.up may have given you the same shot at 15ft. up. To me it all depends on how far I want to shoot and I make the adjustments as needed. Deer are just too unpredictable.

I hunt 16" off the ground, that's the height of the folding chair I sit on. ;)

I dont like heights, so all of my stands are about 10' high, it makes it harder, but i have taken deer from this height.
