how high???
I will keep it simple,, everything aside... sitting on an acre food plot in the middle of 350 acres, of solid oaks in flat bottom land with ridges, up on both sides the land kinda looks like a big U. To sitting on the ridges them self... how high do you hunt?

RE: how high???
All of my hang ons are set at 20 ft. When I hunt with my climbers I might go as high as 30. Kind of depends on the canopy.

RE: how high???
That is a very good and difficult question, one that I often have trouble with. Say if you go up 20 to 30 feet or higher, and your in the line of site of a deer on the ridge or side hill, you have'nt gained nothing, unless you can be completely motion less. I can not. So I would try to place my stand in a place were I could be as concealed as possible and still get a good opportunity to take the shot. If I was using a rifle, might even consider staying on the ground.

RE: how high???
20 foot with hang ons and 15-16 foot with ladders
|
RE: how high???
I usually go up 15 ft. with my climber tree stand.

RE: how high???
That is a very good question as you have a lot of things to consider as haystack stated you have to be concerned of being in line of sight. I've have climbed as high as 45ft to avoid this if the canopy permits,if not a ground blind is another option. Also you must considerbedding area location and deer movement. Then you have to consider thermals to dictate setups on morning or evening hunts. Usally high in mornings low in evenings. Then there is the wind which seems to swirl in hunting hollows as you described. So all of these need to be taken in consideration when choosing a stand or blind placement

RE: how high???
In a climber I want to get as high as I can and still be able to see as far and as clear as I can whether it is 10 feet or 40 feet. I shot two bucks this year sitting flat on the ground leaning up against a tree. It is more important to hunt the wind than anything.

RE: how high???
OK I guess I want to here the average height of your stand,, not considering blinds...????
thanks for all who have imputed so far... |
RE: how high???
I'm using a climber and try to get up 30 feet at least.Got a couple of ladder stands that go up 16 feet.
|
RE: how high???
20ft for me, but in the 70's and 80's I was real high:D

RE: how high???
Like most hunters, I hunt from a treestand to help keep the deer from seeing movement and more importantly, keeping my nasty, human scent above the deer's nose.
In most situations, 18-22 feet should do it. |
RE: how high???
I usually go up 15-20 feet, but the most important thing to consider is the cover around you. I would go up only as high as you have to in order to be the most camoflauged. As one person already mentioned, when you hunt near a ridge, even if you go 30 feet up in your tree, you still may be at the same line of sight of a deer on the ridge. That's why I would go to the height that blocks your outline the best.

RE: how high???
15' - 25' as a rule of thumb. Sometimes higher/lower depending upon terrain, canopy below and available trees. I have gone as high as about 30' and set up as low as about 10'. So - average is about 20".
As already mentioned, playing the wind is a huge key. Also when using a ladder, lock-on or climber, try not to silhouette yourself. Having "back cover" really helps you stay concealed. |
RE: how high???
As for me, I'd rather be 30 feet away that is to avoid deers from seeing any movements. With this far also I can properly prepare for bowing the dear.
|
RE: how high???
15 ft is a good average for me
|
RE: how high???
Looks to me it's all about the wind currents in the ridges and the concealment thing. If you are concealed at 5ft. off the ground and the deer don't see or smell you, and you are able to make a good shot that's what you are looking for. Every situation is different. You never really know how high you need to be. The deer you shot when you were 30ft.up may have given you the same shot at 15ft. up. To me it all depends on how far I want to shoot and I make the adjustments as needed. Deer are just too unpredictable.

RE: how high???
I hunt 16" off the ground, that's the height of the folding chair I sit on. ;)
|
RE: how high???
18-20
|
RE: how high???
I dont like heights, so all of my stands are about 10' high, it makes it harder, but i have taken deer from this height.
|
RE: how high???
I thought he was asking for opinions on how high up the ridge you might sit. Not how far up a tree.
|
RE: how high???
I use a TreeLoungeclimber and usually 20 to 30ft or as high as I can on a ridge!
|
RE: how high???
I misunderstood the question. It would depend on the circumstances.Wind direction, sun direction, where the deer normally travel, ect.I wouldn't want to be on the top and the sun skyline me.
|
RE: how high???
no less than 35-40 feet if possible...i like to get pay up there so the wind is less of a factor in scent control and no deer is going to ever see u at 35 feet high...although i have heard of people hanging their stands no more than 10 feet!!! not quite sure why on earth you would do that but w/e i guess
