first off. what are you going to use it for, and what is your price range. Dont include the at least $200 for a decnt scope into that price. then we can give you some ideas!

well a .30-06 is probably a great place to start. If you are only hunting white tail also look at a .25-06, .243, .270or a 7mm. All great choices. If you think bear or elk are in your future look at a .30-06 up to maybe a .300 that will give you all the power you need for north america.

For years I shot Rem. .270 W/ 130gr NP..............In 1995 I switched to Ruger 6.5mmSwede and still use it today!

Also used .243 and .30-30

Icast a vote for either a .300 WM or a 7mm, I have them both and deer hunt with both of them, also my dad took the 7mm to Canada for Caribou and the .300 WM is great for taking down pigs and Audad. But if your going to be doing target shooting then you might want to look into getting a muzzle break. The recoil is slightly bad, more so on the .300 than the 7mm.

How easy is it to find ammo for it? And how expensive is it?

If your just target shooting and deer hunting, a 308 is a much better choice then a 3006. Ammo is of similar price, and the recoil is significantly less. Your easily good to 250 yd shots, with many people shooting beyond that successfully.

It can also take moose, elk, and black bears within that range with little to know difference then a 3006.
