Selling your trophy

Some lucky hunters are being offeredup to$100,000 for the antlers of the monster deer they shot. (We are talking world record size bucks 250-300 inches). Plus they are given a replical of the anlters to keep.

If you shot a true world class deer, would you sell the antlers for $100k? If not, what amount would it take? There is no right or wrong answer, just wanted to know what other people thought.

For me, all that would matter is the memories, so as long as I had a replica, thoseantlers would be sold to the highest bidder. That money would then go to buying more land.

100k plus a replica-I'm taking that deal.

RE: Selling your trophy

Well If I had a replica.. and it looked exactly the same...Show me the money!

Or you could sell the rights to make replicas and keep the originals. Either way you making cash going toward whatever you need. Giving you more opertunities to hunt if you do it right.

ORIGINAL: Ridge Runner

something is bad wrong with society when a set of deer horns are worth anything to anybody except the guy that killed it.
RR
Not arguing that. Butsome people have more money than they know what to do with. so they might as well send some my way:D

RE: Selling your trophy

There is no price tag to put on a world record class animal that you shot. i know that if i shot one it would come with many hours of hard work in and out of the woods. you could offer me any price and i would not sell the original. if someone wants my deer they can have a replica.

100k isnt enough for me , I need like a quarter mil at least. Chump change for Cabelas or BPS.

RE: Selling your trophy

For 100K they can have my wife and I mean the original and the replica.

I hope it boils down to how much money you have. If 100k means nothing to you bless you. I could see it helping put my kids thru college or buying a nice piece of hunting land to call my own. Maybe pay off the mortgage.

I guess I'll have to cross that bridge next year.

PS.... Are they worth as much if they were pen raised?

Ill take a $500 photo shoot with the deer and they can have it...

RE: Selling your trophy

$100k is a VERY rare price...most of the prices are way exaggerated online. I agree....people are nuts to pay even thousands of dollars for em, but they do.

I have a buddy that took a 202" non-typical with his bow. Cabelas gave him $2500 and (3) exact replicas of his deer...2 went to him, the other is hanging in a Cabelas - that was part of the deal. So he really got 2 replicas. I've seen the pics of them....you cannot tell they are not the original. He said the mounts were approx $1500 if you had to have them made and buy em.

He has one upstairs and downstairs now to look at :Dand he's a tad richer in the process.

I don't ever have to worry about that...Cabelas ain't buying 110" bucks [&:]

The only chance I have of a deer that big is stealing one of the mounts at our Gander Mtn :D I would sell the rack.

RE: Selling your trophy

Cabela's is all but done buying real antler and the word from my friend at Artistic Antlers is that Cabela's hasnt purchased a real set of antlers in almost 3 years. Same with Bass Pro.

There have been 3 deer in history that have brought 100K. Two have sold within the last year. Those three deer were the Tony Luvstuen (Iowa), Jerry Rightmyer (Kansas), and the Ben Knisley buck (Minnesota). The rest that you may have heard has all been fabricated lies and internet rumors.

The chance that you'll ever be offered 100K for ANY buck you kill are extremely slim to none. Please, don't quit your day job!

Without a doubt! It be more than happy with some pictures, a replica, and $100k. I'd buy more land as well

RE: Selling your trophy

i would as long as I got a replica. I would also ask for the original cape to be used with the replica antlers

RE: Selling your trophy

I would think selling the replicas would make more sense....I have a friend in Manitoba that sells all of his racks that dont make B&C to pay for his hunting...

Never would I sell my original rack but I would do as Jason said below

You could sell the rights to make replicas and keep the originals.

I would be hesitant to sell it if i got a rack worth $100,000, because it would certainly be a buck of a lifetime but...that's a lot of money haha.

RE: Selling your trophy

I really would want the original as well.

It certainly would be hard to say until the money is in front of you and your situation....

I think I might give up some cash now for a licensing fee...etc....you probably could make that money back if you rented it out for tours etc....

Or heck just charge $10 a person to view it...

I read a few years back a guy road killed a monster....and he had people stopping at his house non stop simply from a newspaper article and word of mouth.

But I would want to keep it I think, but who knows.

I think that lovingston buck out of IA a few years back got like $50 grand.

RE: Selling your trophy

you could make more selling lots of replica's if it was a true world class buck. i've heard about one this week i'd really like to see ,if its true. a friend tells me he saw it with his own eyes and he measured it. another friend says a guy he works with has pics of the same deer . they both say it was hit by a car in va. and only has 6pts ,but they say its 36inches WIDE.

RE: Selling your trophy

IF it was to happen i probably would. but the problem would be that the money would run out. Now remember this is all theoretical.
First sell it and get the replicas.
second this would also bring some fame your way. use it. start some seminars or speaking event on your story and make money off appearances.
Third use the money to buy some extra land where you killed it and then start an outfitter. people would pay even more to hunt where this deer was taken. then you have a steady stream of alot of money coming in.

in 2005 while I was at Buckorama in Georgia I had a man offer me 8000 for the buck in my avatar ...I told him it just was not for sell ..he said "what would buy it" and I just would not price it to him ...scared he might buy it ..I could never replace him or the feeing I get every time I look at him on the wall.

Whose buying all these replicas some say they would sell?

RE: Selling your trophy

The price of trophy antlers has really tumbled the last couple years. These days you can buy a canned deer hunt with a guarranteed 190-200 inch deer for $15-20k. The deer farms are producing tons of genetically enhanced deer that overshadow most traditionally hunted deer as far as antler size goes. The big name retailerscan buy sheds from these farmsmuch cheaper than what they were paying for free-range trophys a couple years back. IMO the only deer that would be worth money today would be potential world record breakers or other olderwell-publicized kills that are close to the record.

RE: Selling your trophy

Well I suppose if offered a crazy sum of money for my buck I would be compelled to sell it ...my buck was very unique but not a 200in rack ...so I suppose I won't have to worry about it :D
