RE: i bait and am not ashamed about it
I agree the rules in IL can be gray. I want to setup a few food plots in the back yard next year. They are all ready pains to mow the grass there and it is where the deer walk.
I am not fans of the feeders or salt blocks because of the CWD that is in our area.I have no problem with hunters speading out grain or spoiling fruit. I guess when I was up in my stand eating an apple before shooting time and tossing the core on the trail would be baiting. |
RE: i bait and am not ashamed about it
ORIGINAL: bryant1 Baiting isjust a part of stillhunting here. I don't know anyone who hunts in clubs and other private land that doesn't use corn/bait. I don't see why anyone wouldn't bait where it is legal, and i don't understand why some on here have the attitude that baiting is sloppy or almost like it is canned hunting because it isn't. We may stand better odds to concentrate deer to a area, butnot bigger bucks. |
RE: i bait and am not ashamed about it
My .02 cents. Behind this camera, the terrain rises about 50 to 60 feet into a pasture. I have sat up there in the dead of winter and been able to count over 140 deer below in the fields of the cameras view.
As you can see, i put 100lbs of corn on the ground, i put it there at about 2:30 pm on the 15th, i just pulled the camera this morning and it had run up 75 pic's. I cannot hunt the ground lying to the east, (you can see the field change in the pic) of the 75 photos, there were only 2 bucks in any of the photos, the smaller younger of the 2 was on the corn, i didnt get any pics of the 10 pointer actually eating the corn. I hunted here early in the season, and twice during the rut, i only saw 1 buck, chasing a Doe. Trust me, there are some true giants that run this area. I also got a nice 13 pointer on camera back in sept over some corn i had put out in another location, i hunted that buck over 20 times and never once saw him alive and walking, i only got his pic once, never took the camera back to that spot. i dont have a clue where he is or might be. I view baiting as more of another tool in the arsenal we have with which to hunt. some states allow the use of dogs to chase deer, ppl bait bears, decoys for ducks, i guess it must be ok for the commercial fisherman to use giant nets, crabbers to put food in their pots, and yes, some ppl hunt high fence locations, some ppl trap coyotes, some call them, and some run them with dogs and have the dogs do the killing. heck, some ppl hunt Pheasants that have been taken out of their pen and actually placed in the field for them to flush and shoot. the long and short story is................there are many different laws, different ways , and methods. to each his own provided they are using the legal methods of their state. I also believe that there can be different degrees of satisfaction in how we hunt, for me, that is why i took up bowhunting, for years i rifle hunted, and killed a buck every season, (didnt kill last year or this year yet with my bow) it was always fun, to sit waiting, hunting.....ambushing..whatever we call it. i guess the only one true hunter must be the person who carves out a bow of osage orange, makes his arrow, flint knapps his point, and enters the woods in a loin cloth , no ladder stand or climber, no camo, decoy, grunt tube, snort wheeze, Tinks #69, no .300 super mag with a 4 x 400 laser range finding bullet compensating wind drift calculating hand loaded nickel plated brass with super sharp bleeder blades. What has happened to hunting??? I did shoot a Doe with my .300 win mag a few days ago, i had a buddy walk the river and push them to me, i had to walk all of 31 steps to where she lay. sure wish i had a four wheeler to pack her out on, i had to walk a 1/4 mile to get the truck, i took her home and winched her up with my reciever hitch hoist to get her 40lbs of meat. left her remnants lying in a pasture..........as bait.........hoping to catch a coyote feeding on her. |

RE: i bait and am not ashamed about it
I look at the bait as a possible means with which to pull the deer from the adjoining.
