I agree that bad shots can be made with any caliber, and I will also go along with the "no such thing as overkill" statement.
BUT, JagMag's point about using a gun/caliber that you can handle is also very valid. I have personally gone through my own bout of magnumitis and have realized that I can shoot more and actually enjoy it more by using a 6.5x55 or 308 rather than getting my teeth rattled using a 300 WM or 375 H&H.
From my personal experience, I make better, more calculated shots when I shoot my 6.5x55 than I ever did slinging lead out of my 300 WM. I am also able to watch bullet impact through my scope rather than have to reacquire my target after recovering from the recoil.

You don't know if the guy flinched or not. You are just assuming he did. I have seen flinching and bad shots with a 243.

IMO Overkill. I used to use a .300 but was more accurate with a .270. Accuracy is the name of the game. If he can shoot that Mag accurately, more power to him I guess.

i have used a 300 weatherby mag and that's what the round does. from my experience the usual exit hole is about the size of a baseball. that does must have been close and the shot low to blow the bottom off of it.
also, that's why i went with the 30-06. i get alot of close shots and didn't want that to happen to me.

I've done the same thing with my .270 and my .30-06.
Easy gutting isn't it?
From my experience when you hit something hard, like bone,
along with the construction of the bullet it can have these effects.
Doesn't matter what caliber, however, the bigger the punch the potential for more damage.

I certainly wasn't advocating that this person couldn't shoot his 300WBY well. I do not know him and certainly do not know how well he shoots and amnot going to make a stupid assumption about him.
I was simply pointing out the reason the deer chest cavity was split open like it was. No more and no less. It wasn't the cartridge necessarily but simply where the bullet entered the deer. Everything lined up just right for this to happen to a deers chest.

i have i weather vangaurd in 300 weatherby mag and it a fist sized hole through the exit a bear in sasketwan, the same thing to a deer in sullivan county NY
