i thank everyone for their stories. i do have good news though, went out again this morning and i think i saw the buck i shot,to much cover to be sure but the rack and body size was close. and it looked as if he was going back to same bedding area he was in yesterday. hopefully next time i see him i can harvest him.

Yeup im in the same boat.I was hunting once and a doe came in to about 20 yards and i let an arrow fly. The problem was she knew i was there and did a 180 degree turn and i caught her in the back leg. She limped a little but still survived.

I think that it is safe to say that every long time deer hunter has had a similar experience. Personally I just hate it when I wound and do not recover deer (or any game for that matter). In 45+ years of hunting deer, I have failed to recover 5 (3 archery and 2 gun). I kid oyu not, I can recall every detail of these 5 "screw ups".
Take heart though. Critters are tough. If you did not clip a vital area, and if infection does not set in, the buck will likely do fine.
