Whats the best deer caliber? I want to buy a new gun?
243, 7mm-08, 308, 30-30.

7mm-08 is a good flat shooting caliber.

I would have to go with 30-06.

An all-around caliberand many loads to choose from.

I voted .243 only because that's what I shoot most of my deer with but I'd like to have them all

I voted .270 because that's what I have but to be honest, the .30-06 is probably the best all around rifle caliber in North America. They have bullets weights/style that allow you to hunt everything from coyotes to grizzly bears.

I think the 270 and 7mm 08 have the best combination of power, manageable recoil , practical range, and availability of ammo.

Cant go wrong with a savage, although IMO their synthetic stocks are pretty lousy. I scraped mine and bought a factory walnut stock for my 111 7mag. Much better.

It has killed countless deer over the years but its not the best ANYMORE it was for decades and its still around because most guns are built to last lifetimes not years. There are many newer rounds that are better but that doesn't mean the 30-30 is obsulete.

If your in thick cover and under 150yds, get yourself a 12ga. I've seen nothing that can drop a deer quicker, including the .30 cals. With the shotguns they have now they're good out to 200yds (with plenty of bench time). If your stuck on a rifle get a .270 wsm it has the same same ballistics of the 7mm Remag, with a little more punch. My two cents.
