one more question walker or anyone...is it too late to set up a portable ground blind for this year? our season here goes through january 3rd I believe..2nd or 3rd..

My father in law got me a blind I just never set it up...and the one stand that is set up is the only stand I have right now, and it is a 2 man ladder stand not a portable climbing stand..so moving that one right now by myself is kind of not gonna happen LOL...

but setting up a blind now close to the signs, too late for that? would it spook the deer?

I also have the primos doe bleat can, and a grunt call...not sure how to use the grunt effectivley so I havent used it that much..although the day I saw the 9 pointer back by the stand I was using the primos can...not sure if that had anything to do with it...but he stepped out of my woods onto the logging road..looked towards me I was downwind from him at the time, and then took a few steps towards me then stepped off into the thicket of the young pines...

I would stay away from the bleat can. I try to use those early in the season and late in the season. I've heard far too many horror stories about bleat cans actually spooking older, more wary bucks. If you don't know how to use the grunt call effectively, ONLY use it to stop a buck from walking out of a shooting lane. Just hit it real quick while you have him in your sights. Depending on what the rut is doing in your parts, you maybe could hang some Tinks Scent bombs maybe 25-30 yards away from you. If the buck thinks there's a hot doe in the area, he will come and smell the scent bomb, giving you enough time to blast him.

There's no way anyone could tell if it would spook the deer or not. It depends. I was just kind of screwing around in bow season and set up a blind the evening before the morning I hunted it. About 4 very young does came within about 30 yards from it and couldn't stand the sight of it. They were stomping their feet, blowing... it was bad. So using that reasoning, I would say definitely no blind. Because if young does got spooked, and old buck that frequents a specific area will definitely notice a difference.

You could definitely use the blind this season in an area where you're not confined to such close quarters. With a 60yd + shot, you could set up your new blind. Spray a whole bottle of the cheaper Hunter's Specialties scent/cover spray on it, because new blinds smell like straight plastic. Also, you probably already know this, but conceal the blind very well.

In your case, I would set up near the rubs, but not too close. See if there are any trails leading to the rubs, and then set up off the trail a ways.

I sware I have the WORST luck...well this morning I cant hunt, I had to come in to work until noon...I got up at 5:45am, got in my truck turned the headlights on, and what do I see behind my house? a BUCK!!! I've been hunting behind my house since the opener..and the one day I cant hunt the morning there is a buck .....appeared to be eatin acorns (not sure about that) he wasnt huge..appeared to be a 6 or 7 but thats good enough for me, as I dont shoot a lot of deer!...it is also snowing pretty good here for the first time tis year, not suposed to accumulate though..but there was a dusting on the gorund before I left for work...

I get off at noon, so I'm russhing home and I dont care, As soon as I get home, I'm setting up and sitting until dark, and then repeating tomorrow..

It's almost like they KNOW "he's not hunting today lets taunt him" LOL

Hope everyone has a good hunt this weekend!

RE: need advice please

well, last monday I saw a 9 point buck to far from my stand to shoot...havent sen him since until this morning.
I am looking for some advice on how to get him...referring to my poor quality picture I have posted in this thread. I was in my tree stand marked with the "X" and he came out of the oaks again about 80 yards northfrom me in the standright before sun rise, crossed the logging road (which is the yellow line going north to south in the pic)went into the "young pines" in the picture which is right behind my tree stand and then he stopped...I think he layed down as it is REALLY thick in the young pines..I cannot see in there, the pines are about 6 to 10 feet tall..this is the second time I've seen him go in there in the mornings...he comes out of the oaks in front of my stand about 80 yards up from me, crosses the logging road and heads into the pine thicket to bed (I think he is bedding), always before sunrise latley

My question is, will a buck use the same trail to exit the beddding area, that he used to come in on? I mean he is stopping RIGHT behind the tree stand when he's in there..but I jus cant see him!!!! would a grunt entice him out? ??

I'm gettin frustrated with this buck! I cant go into the pine thicket because it is not my property.

Basically, my questions are, will they use the same path entering and exiting a bedding area, ordiff paths usually? and when I see/hear him going in there again would a grunt call entice him out? if so which kind of grunt? I'm not great with a grunt call, but have been learning the diff grunts
