Have any of you scouted out a nice piece of land, only to return at the beginning of the season, to find it POSTED?[:'(] Not funny, cause it happened to me. Now I am working on some over pressured, over hunted public property.
I spoke to the guy that owns the land and he told me, that some guys ruined some saplings he had planted in his field, with their ATV.[:@] So no more access, he don't care who you are.[:@][:@] Any suggestions on making this work because the season already started. I had previously hunted that other piece of property, that got posted, for almost eight years and now it's gone. I am kicking myself for putting all my eggs in one basket.[:@] Also, I am new to the board, so hi everyone! Wayne from NH Happy Hunting!!:) |

Welcome to the forums.
That sucks. I have been very fortunate not to have that happen to me yet. Hopefully your other land will work out just as good for you! Or Better!!!!;) |
RE: Posted Property
Hi. Welcome to the forums. Ask him if he wants help to replant. Maybe you will get in good with him and he will let you hunt it then.

RE: Posted Property
Nice thing about Wisconsin, its illegal no matter if private property is posted or not. It is the hunters responsibility to know if land is public or not. If its not public and its not yours just stay off. Simple....;)

RE: Posted Property
Heck ofer to purchase and plant some trees . What is it worth to you to unt the ground! Ne has taxes, insurances and sweat equity in that ground. Offer some trees. Maybe someday you can take a kid back i 30 years and poit to the trees you planyed.

RE: Posted Property
Well its late in the season anyway. See if the owner would like some help replanting this spring as well as helping him out with odds and ends through out the winter months. This may get you in good with him. Make a friend. Visit once in a while, call just to say hi and bs with him. Let him know you can help him take care of the property and make sure no one else is messing around on the land.

RE: Posted Property
I agree with above posts. Try to rebuilt trust with the guy by helping him out and see what happens. It might take a few years but could be worth it.

RE: Posted Property
Here is what I would suggest bro, talk to the guy again and assure him you will not only respect his property but will keep an eye out for anyone who is trespassing or abusing it. You might want to offer to help him replant or replace some of the damaged trees in return for gaining permission again. Never hurts to try

RE: Posted Property
I used to live in NH. If you think you have it rough with finding a spot to hunt, come to Northern Indiana. All privately owned land is off-limits without permission. I'd trade with you in a heartbeat.

RE: Posted Property
Funny thing is that it was probably some kids on 4-wheelers that messed things up instead of a hunter. We occasionally have problems with that in the area where i own land, but i would not use that as an excuse to not let innocent people hunt my ground.
Like other folks said, I would try to sit down and have a long talk with the guy and explain that having you around may be the best way to help prevent people coming around and tearing stuff up. Think that offering to help repair the damage would be a great move as well. if he is a drinking man, I would suggestbringing a 12 pack with youand catch him whenyou know he is about to stop work. Have a couple beers and lay out your case, then head out and leave the rest of the beer with him. |
RE: Posted Property
Yeah i agree with a lot people. Talk to him, tell him your side. Tell him you will keep others out. I got permission with my neighbor because people kept tresspassing on her land, I said if im hunting there i would put in end to it. She went for it, and i did put an end to it. Also, tell him you will buy him some trees and plant them, small price to pay for some good hunting.

RE: Posted Property
First of all, welcome to the forum.
Second, can you blame him? Once when I was younger, me and my dad had a place on the river where we had permission to fish and had good access to put a boat in the river. We used it for about 10-12 years until one of the farm hands sons threw a party out there and it got busted by the police (turned out not to be the first time). The gate got closed and locked. We put in many hours of fishing and taking care of the property always making sure we left it better than we found it when we arrived. As bad as that sucks, I'm sure the land owner finally got sick and tired of cleaning up the hundereds of beer cans and all the other trash so his cattle wouldn't get injured. If I was in his shoes I may have done the same thing. Goes the same with your hunting property owner. It's really bad shoes to be in, but you can't control what other people do. With that being said, you can control what you do. You can seperate yourself from the other hunters there and form a good releationship with the landowner above just being one of the guys who he lets hunt there. I beleive good deeds, good conversation and maybe a nice christmas gift (even if it's a basket full of deer meat) can seperate you from the rest. Let him know that you are appreciative for the opportunity he has given you and maybe you can get back in. It's worth a try. What do you have to lose now? All he can say is no, which will be no different than the situation your in. |

RE: Posted Property
Welcome!
I'm also from NH (Salem area). Sounds like your out of luck unless you can catch a break with his sensitive side by offering a helping hand, it might take a few years to crack him, who knows?! Good luck and start planning to add hunting spots to your inventory, that never hurts. Where are you from? |
