Who smokes while they are hunting?
 

Who smokes while they're hunting? I've seen this asked but haven't seen a poll. I don't smoke, but if I did, I wouldn't while hunting. Just know the deer would smell it from the downwind side, and plus it's extra movement. That big buck may also be coming downwind and smell it and never come past you then.

I smoke, but not while hunting. I have trouble enough holding my farts in let alone give them the scent of smoke:D

I let myfarts rip lol. Never had a deer spook because of it smelling a fart. One time I farted when a doe was close. Thought it was going to be quiet, but it wasn't lol. She looked around like what the hell was that lol.

It was funny. She looked so confused, but after about a minute, she went back to eating. It took me all I had to keep from laughing out loud.

I smoke..ButNOT while hunting...been trying to quit..but have some trouble doing so lol. I put on a patch when i get up to go hunting.. keep the hunting clothes in the bed of the truck in a bag. Fart while hunting??? I fart way more thanI care to admit.. it would be impossible for me not to do so while hunting!!! lmao

Obviously, I don't recommend it, but I smoke, and yes, while hunting. This thread made me reflect back through the years, and I believe nearly every buck I've taken since I got out of the service, including four that score between 141"-163 ", I had a cig. lit or just finished it. I'm not concerned with the smell factor because, IMHO, if the buck can smell your smoke, they can smell your scent. That's why I concentrate on finding wind transition areas. The movement/noise involved with smoking is more detrimental, IMHO, while hunting.

I think you underestimate how "loud" smoke smells. When someone that smokeswalks in my office, I smell it instantly. Perfumes and even BO doesn't catch my attention as quickly. I've hunted with my dad for 30 years. We hunt the same way, in the same areas---only difference is that he smokes. I've killed 8 deer over 130", he hasn't killed one. He does whack the heck out of 2 1/2 y/o bucks, though. Most of the places we hunt, we can't see over 100 yds. You can probably get away with smoking more when you can see a long way---and you can definitely enjoy the hunt more if you get to relax with a smoke.

to young and think its nasty for one thing but my buddy, who is old enough, smokes sometimes and everytimehe smokes in the woods he see's a deer

I have had many hunting buddies that puff cigars while hunting, never seems to bother the deer. I'd like to see a study, buy my guess would be that, as much as their noses are tuned to 'human scent', I'm not sure they can distinguish between 'human smoke' and all the other smoke out there from woodburning stoves, fireplaces, etc.

i also chew tobacco while in my stand. i use to smoke and would smoke in my stand. did i kill deer....yes....but not near as many as i do now when i'm smoke free.

Heard the swishers are the best? I don't think it's a good idea to smoke in the stand. I do know people that have been smoking and then killed a deer.

I quit this year (labor day) and have seen a few more deer than usual. Of course it may just be that I am not moving around as much digging out a smoke, lighting it, etc.

i dont smoke but my grandpa smokes Swisser Sweet cigars on deer drives and sometimes when hes sitting. he still has deer come to him.

I used to smoke back in the day before I quit. Yes, I killed deer while smoking. However, I did seem to see more when I didn't smoke. I pretty much do the scent-free ritual now.

I dont smoke but I also dont think it is stupid for other people to smoke while they are hunting.
If it does scare away the big one that gives me a chance to shoot it.

My older brother on the other hand, easily downs a pack a day. In '99 opening day he shot a 160" deer from one of our family's farms....with a bow....with a smoke hanging from his lips...work clothes on with his work boots. He should be in a study sometime...b/c he goes hunting after working and farming...smelling like BO x 10! Every year he gets a good deer.


He gives me a hard time to this day every time a discussion comes up about scent elimination products. His famous line, "Sucker born every minute. Deer are stupid."

I dont smoke but i dip snuff in the stand. My dad use to smoke though and backin the early 80s he killed alot of deer while smoking in the stand, along without plaid shirts and jeans on out of his now 'antique' climbing stand:D

I quit smoking this year. So, this will be the first time I've hunted in 25 years and haven't smoked while hunting. I'm giving those tooth picks hell though.....

I smoke about a pack a week, but when I'm at hunting camp, or fishing, I smoke a pack a day.Don't smokewhen I'm bow hunting, but with rifle I smoke.I'll hold off opening day, at least till noon, maybe have one or two, then stop from 2 - 5. I'll throw on some more cover scent, and your good to go. When does or small buckscome in the area,I'll wait awhile, but if they bed down, I'll purposely light up toget their reaction, and they really don'tgive a damn. An alert, older doe will bolt if the smoke hits her, but not all the time. When I started hunting, all the older members smoked when hunting andshotbig deer. Is now any different than then ?

A smoker who pays attention to wind issues, will fare better than a non-smoker who doesn't, IMHO![:@]

I smoke while still hunting and use the smoke as a wind checker. Yes, I have seen deer with a cig hanging out of my mouth and yes they were fairly close. 2 years ago I had one walk up on me about 15 yards away while I was trying to pull my waders up. She glanced at me as to try to figure out what I was then went on eating. I watched her for a good 10 mins or so before she walked away and she never acted spooked in any way. Oh yeah, I had a cig lit while I was relieving myself. Put it out just before pulling up my waders.

i smoke in the woods and i think thats part of the reason im not seeing as many deer as i should iuse a bottle with water and tie it to my stand to put then out in so the butts are not just on the ground stinking the place up but i think i might just stop smokeing in the woods i bet i would see alot more deer

I dont smoke and I wouldnt if I did while hunting. But I've seen deer sniff and smell cigarettes and never react.
