The d40 is okay. I don't like the quality of the pictures that it produces though and they don't have great battery life and they have a "sleep mode" that takes an extra 2 seconds for them to wake up before they trigger if it has been a while since they took their last picture (I think it is after 10 minutes they go into sleep mode).
I don't think the d40 is a useable "trail" camera either, but it does okay as a bait cameraalthoughitdoesn't take as good of pictures or have as reliable of a sensor as the Stealth I-590 that is about $30 cheaper. There seem to be more problems with the d40's as well. You might check out www.chasingame.com for more information in their discussionboards or ask all these questions in the trail camera forum here. the d40 will work just find if you set it up like trail camera's were designed to be set up. point it down the trail, not straight across the trail. no camera on the market will catch a deer if you set it up straight across the trail. the pictures you see some people have that the camera is straight across the trail and the deer is in the center of the pic, is because that is probably the second deer that walked by. if you are on a tight budget, buy the d40 and aim it down a trail and you will be fine.

a good example of this is the guy on the cuddeback commercial. if you watch closely he does not walk straight in front of the camera, he actually walks in an arch to get the camera to sense movement BEFORE he is in front of the camera.

Look on the sportsmansquide.com their magazine had one for $109 dollars. 5.0megapixel with 256sd card.

I've owned 3 moultries including an I-40 (the 2007 model which is supposed to be much better than the 2008 model) as well as 2 stealth cams and a bushnell and this little scoutguard has the best trigger by far.    Thisis at the intersection of 2 trails and is pretty much perpendicular to the one right in front of the camera. It sure isn't pointed down the trail. And it isn't getting the 2nd deer, bucks are traveling solo this time of year. It is catching them as soon as they step into sensor range and it is set on medium sensitivity. It is set to take 10 second videos and then wait 6 seconds before taking another. |

No. That is the scoutguard 550.
I don't think the d40 makes a good trail camera. I don't think the Stealth I540 IR would either. If you want a good camera for trail use you need to step up to the $200 mark and get a scoutguard 550. If you are using it for bait a D40 would work fine but the Stealth I590 takes better pictures for a little cheaper price. |
