Nothing that is any good. There are a few flash cameras that are right around $100 that do well over baited areas, but you would be disappointed with them if you were trying to use them on a trail.

If you want to go to the $200 price range the ScoutGuard 550's are a good choice IMO. They actually have a quick enough trigger time you can set them out on a trail. I've gotten coyotes, bobcats, deer, raccoons, pigs, etc. on mine. All in 5 weeks on a trail.

RE: good trailcam?

I just bought my first trailcam and wanted infrared, video, and it needed to be digital. I couldn't find anything that met those criteria for less than $200. I ended up getting the ScoutGuard 550 (via an Amazon.com link that put me through to TrailCamPro). So far, so good. It supposedly has a very long battery life, and is much smaller than other brands. It also has a faster trigger time (about 1.2 seconds).

Good luck.

how far can flash ones take pics from?

RE: good trailcam?

If I was going to spend $100 on a trail camera right now I would get the Stealth I-590. It is right at $100 and has a really good flash range (they advertise it as 90 feet), has good battery life and takes very nice pictures. The only drawback is it's trigger time. It is pretty slow and this camera needs to be over a baited sight where the deer are going to be sticking around rather than moving down a trail.

moultrie gamespy d40 is 130 and looks great

RE: good trailcam?

The d40 is okay. I don't like the quality of the pictures that it produces though and they don't have great battery life and they have a "sleep mode" that takes an extra 2 seconds for them to wake up before they trigger if it has been a while since they took their last picture (I think it is after 10 minutes they go into sleep mode).

I don't think the d40 is a useable "trail" camera either, but it does okay as a bait cameraalthoughitdoesn't take as good of pictures or have as reliable of a sensor as the Stealth I-590 that is about $30 cheaper. There seem to be more problems with the d40's as well.

You might check out www.chasingame.com for more information in their discussionboards or ask all these questions in the trail camera forum here. Chasingame.com has a forum specific to Moultrie cameras that you might check out as well - http://www.chasingame.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=9

Good luck. You'll need it with a d40! ;)

the d40 will work just find if you set it up like trail camera's were designed to be set up. point it down the trail, not straight across the trail. no camera on the market will catch a deer if you set it up straight across the trail. the pictures you see some people have that the camera is straight across the trail and the deer is in the center of the pic, is because that is probably the second deer that walked by. if you are on a tight budget, buy the d40 and aim it down a trail and you will be fine.

RE: good trailcam?

a good example of this is the guy on the cuddeback commercial. if you watch closely he does not walk straight in front of the camera, he actually walks in an arch to get the camera to sense movement BEFORE he is in front of the camera.

So I guess my scoutguard didn't take these videos? Click on the thumbnails to get an idea of how quickly it picks up the deer when they come in range. It is a little slower on the bobcat in the last clip but it is set on medium sensitivity so it doesn't trigger on every little critter that moves by.

I've owned 3 moultries including an I-40 (the 2007 model which is supposed to be much better than the 2008 model) as well as 2 stealth cams and a bushnell and this little scoutguard has the best trigger by far.

Thisis at the intersection of 2 trails and is pretty much perpendicular to the one right in front of the camera. It sure isn't pointed down the trail. And it isn't getting the 2nd deer, bucks are traveling solo this time of year. It is catching them as soon as they step into sensor range and it is set on medium sensitivity. It is set to take 10 second videos and then wait 6 seconds before taking another.

this is the d40?
how do you feel abnout the stealthcam I540 IR compared to the moultree d40? the stralthcam is oinly 20 dollars more expensive

npaden 11-12-2008 07:08 PM

RE: good trailcam?

No. That is the scoutguard 550.

I don't think the d40 makes a good trail camera. I don't think the Stealth I540 IR would either.

If you want a good camera for trail use you need to step up to the $200 mark and get a scoutguard 550.

If you are using it for bait a D40 would work fine but the Stealth I590 takes better pictures for a little cheaper price.

Have you checked out the link I gave you or looked in the trail camera forum? There are folks who do this pretty much as a hobby that post there. Many of them have built their own cameras at one time or another. You can also see the problems that a bunch of folks are having with the D40. I just sent my I40 back to Moultrie to get the LCD fixed and this seems like it is a very common problem with the Moultries.

I don't have a dog in this fight, I've just been trying to lead you in the right direction so you won't waste $100 on a mediocre camera that won't do what you want it to. There are lots of folks on www.chasingame.com with experience with multiple camera brands that can help you.

um, those deer aren't walking straight (horizontaly) across the camera, they are angled. this allows the cam to sense movement before the deer is actually in front of the cam. the Scout Gaurd is a great cam, probably one of the best made now, but it ain't a miracle cam by any means.

RE: good trailcam?

Walmart carries the Moultrie Gamespy 4.0 (D40 I think ) Its not a bad camera. And for 99 bucks its a good start. I think you'll be happy with it. It takes video and/or stills.

From the little I have used mine placement is 99% of it. You have to have an opening or a trail and aim it down the opening. Bait if you want. I don't and have had alot of pretty nice video.

I think its you best bet for your price range. Plus you can just go get one a walmart
