Your Traditions?

Since we are all hunters...most of us have superstitions, curious as to what y'all do....personally...on opening day I have a ritual I go through. Also, for 10 years now I grow out a full beard....I wear the same clothes on opening day....same insulated underwear, even though my wife bought me new ones...same hunting jacket that is over 50 years old...was originally my fathers....and many more...anyways

what do you guys do?

nothing really, just wake up and hunt.

although i do pick out one hat and wear it all season long, everytime i go hunting. then the next season i pick a different one.

RE: Your Traditions?

Afterwardspeople here (traditionally)would go to their local pub and have a wee dram and celebrate the hunt.

Alot wear traditional hunting clothing (kilts, tweed jackets, hats with a pheasant feather ontop) but that is mostly outfitters that will do that for tourists coming for trophy hunts to make it more "traditional" like it was done here for thousands of years.

You will find the majority wear camo.

I can'r really think of anything else but im sure people have their own rituals.

No traditions for me. I just get out and hunt.

RE: Your Traditions?

I always eat Italian food on the Friday night before the season starts. Saturday night is usually deer, elk or caribou...depends on what I have in the freezer.

wake up at 4 am and eat captain crunch(peanut butter) while watching reruns of seinfeld, waiting for my dad to get up and i'm already packed suited up and ready to go but he's still in underwear.

RE: Your Traditions?

Usually at least for the past 15 years, I get potatoes and sausage cooked the night before. We usually have a shot of schnapps and a beer and draw names for what blind you are going to hunt. Opening morning I get up start coffee and breakfast -eggs, potatoes, sausage and toast. Then we are out from dawn to dark.

any new traditions?

bryant1 08-26-2009 12:55 PM

I wear the same dorky camo fanny pack during bow and muzzleloader seasons. i also wear my favorite browning sweatshirt the first day of general gun season .

I don't know if it counts as a ritual, but me and a few buddies of mine text each other when we see the first deer on every hunt.

rh160kid 08-26-2009 01:05 PM

Take four advil due to staying up to late the nite before drinking beer and swapping old hunting stories with friends. Thats my ritual.

I just pictured myself out here in Canada on opening morning wearing a kilt, first off, i don't have the legs for it but more importantly, think I'd likely freeze something off!!!

Just couldn't resist RemingtonGirl, great post, it's very cool to hear how hunters in other parts of the world prepare for the hunt!!!

SWThomas 08-26-2009 01:17 PM

Rituals are a little silly IMO. I just get out there and hunt also.

bowtruck 08-26-2009 01:21 PM

we watch a old Jeff fox worthy hunting video shoot the breeze the nite before in the morning we all get up go to a hunters breakfast. Then we fight over who gets to pay the bill.

Tobe_B 08-26-2009 01:28 PM

I don't know if it's really a ritual. But for the last few years I get up, fight for coffee with my dad (he always wins), I make another pot of coffee eat a package of brown sugar and cinnamon pop tarts. Drive to the gate where I open it while my dad stays in the cozy truck (whether he is drivin or not) By this time the pot of coffee usually catches up with me and I'm forced to start the morning litterally freezin my jewels off. And I do that every morning all season long.

Spend time around a campfire with good friends, telling old hunting stories and drinking a cold one or two......the first person who passes out, I smear deer poo on their face.

magicman54494 08-26-2009 05:08 PM

my Grandpa and I would always drink a shot after a successful hunt. Grandpa is gone now but I still do a shot in his memory.

hunter74079 08-26-2009 06:13 PM

I don't have any traditions but I am thinking starting one of just hunting on the day before Thanksgiving, day of, and day after because for the past 3 years I have killed my buck then. 2006-Thanksgiving morning 2007-Thanksgiving afternoon 2008- day before Thanksgiving...do you see a trend here?

FlDeerman 08-26-2009 06:54 PM

none sorry

wis_bow_huntr 08-27-2009 02:49 AM

Wow all these traditions makes me think its already gun season in WI. lol. I dont really have much for tradition, get up at 330-4 make my cofee get dressed, load up the truck, fill my thermos, head to the farm, sit and have a good breakfast with my father in law, brother, cousin, and who ever else decides to show up. We reminisce about previous seasons, plan our attack wich usually involves us just sitting in our rifle stands, picking on my little brother and bringing up the year we got him so hammered on Dr.McGillicudy the night before gun season on his B-day..and yet he managed to make it to his stand. Hence his hunting nickname Peppermint Patty...lol..then we all head out to the stands. All meet up around 10 or so, have a bite to eat and head back to the stands for the rest of the day. Listen to everyone in the county complain about not seeing any deer over the walkie talkies. My brother giving the weather forcast on the hour lol...usually ends with a 100% chance of dark.

I can almost feel the almost sub zero temps on my nose, the smell of crisp leaves rotting on the ground, the chill of a light north breeze off the river, ohh yes, its hunting season....

RugerM77.270 08-27-2009 04:11 AM

About the only tradition I have is a hat that I wear on nearly every hunt I go on. I have killed most of my deer in that hat, I have tried other hats but they just don't feel right. Last summer my wife talked me into washing it and when season came around I had the worst trouble connecting with a deer. I told her she washed all the mojo out of it and I was having to build it back up.

:patriot: something to be thankful for :woot:

As for me. I think the tradition starts before openning day. Nothing like goin out mid-late afternnon picking a nice spot a good distance off from you planned hunting area and watching that 1st deer slowly come into veiw. The best part of this if your lucky is when you spot that buck you'll be dreaming about every night until seasons over.

fastetti 08-27-2009 03:17 PM

I actually have a lot of traditions/rituals before I go out hunting. When Im deer hunting with my good friend (we only deer hunt hours from home so its a road trip) we always have a bud light and a shot of jager the night before opening day. We order 3 of each, one for each of us and one for our other hunting buddy who passed away a few years ago when he was 27. We do it to toast a good friend and hope he can influence the big man upstairs to send some big bucks out way!

Another one is I always wear my Miller Lite Opening day tshirt. Always brings me luck.

Opening morning, when I get to my blind, I always say a quick prayer for a safe and fun season.....and to see a lot of deer as well!

Started a tradition a few years ago that we saw in Field and Stream or Outdoor life. We have a bottle of bullit whiskey that only gets drank out of after we have killed a deer and only ONE shot of it too. This is only done at night too when the hunting is complete. Since we only drink this whiskey when we have gotten a deer it tastes oh so sweet when we do get to have it.

Im a sucker for traditions. I think everyone should have one at least. Its the little things in deer hunting that make it worth it.

while i go clean shaven for the most of the year, i'll start growing my sideburns out elvis style about this time of the year so that 2 weeks from now they look ridiculous and i'm ready to go. i'll trim them so as not to get too bushy, but from september through january 1, i've got a good set of chops.

nick_bleuer76 08-27-2009 08:16 PM

I watch Bonanza as I get ready.
