One trick that I have used before andit does apretty good. Leave it in the jar and they will lick it clean.

take the lid off the jar and screw it to a tree then screw the jar back to the lid and cut a hole in the bottom. the deer will lick the jar clean

Correct, and so will all the other creatures, including dogs.

My dogs love peanut butter, it's how I give them pills if I need to, so it will attract coyotes too. I put peanut butter on a PVC pipe that goes thru the bottom of a bucket feeder. I hang the feeder high enough that a coyote, coon, or hog can't reach the stick. When the deer licks the stick, the feed falls out. Deer like grape kool-aid too. Mix it sweet and rich and pour it on a log or stump.

I'm sure it would work in colder weather, but the dang fireants took over the jar each time I tried it. I should have waited for the cold to run them in the ground.
