would you? yes or no

If all you had was a .243 shooting an 80 grain bullet on the last evening you can hunt and time is almost gone, with a leary buck standing broad side 300 yards away, would you take the shot? you have a steady rest in a deer blind.

1st day, middle of the season, or last day shouldnt have an effect on your shot ethics

as long as your practiced for a shot of that distance, the bullet is enough!

If you are confident in the shot, why not?

shot placement is the key

Dead deer, don't even have to think about it.

I wouldn't take the shot because of two reasons:

[ol][*]Not comfortable with a shot of that distance, even with a more powerful rifle/bullet grain combo[*]In my opinion, that is aHIGHRISK SHOT. Too many variables to consider to make an ethical shot/ethical kill.[/ol]
That's my two cents worth.

Nope, because rifles are illegal to hunt deer with in IA :)

"All I have is a .243 in a centerfire"...It's taken over 150 whitetails...

With either the Federal Premium 85gr HPBT Sierra GameKing or the 100gr Remington CoreLokt, that buck would be taking a ride home with me...:D

I shoot .243win for the deer season, and I use 80's and 85's. You still have over 1000ft/lbs even out to 400yrds and at 300yrds I am around 5 inches low depending on the ammo I sighted with, and the ammo I am using (I use 2 different loads and they vary at most 10" at 500yrds and I know how much at what distance). I would take that shot any day. I wouldn't even think about it more that to do the math in my head. 300yrds or less is a dead deer unless all I have is an off-hand standing shot then I would be really cautious past 150yrds and nothing moving past 100yrds.

With a solid rest it is no question though. Shoot soon before he decides to vamoose.

I shoot the federal's and that is a DEAD-on plan. Pun intended.

I know people that can make that shot easily. I also know people that make claims of 300 yard shots all the time that would probably estimate a true 300 yards to be 500-600.I think the answer to the poll would fall on the confidence of the hunter. The bullet and caliber are fine tools for this job.

I agree with most of the "I'd take the shot" people. 243 at that range with that bullet. Yes, no problem. I coyote hunt and that helps my accuracy andconfidenceduring deer season. I use that same 243 for both animals.

If your capable of making the shot, the gun and load is more than capable.

i shoot a .243 with 100gr remington core-loks. i wouldnever take that shot. its too far away shot for a .243 and but if you were to hit the deer it wouldnt be ethical

Like mentioned, you have to beconfident with the placementandthe distance of the shot! In other word's, you should have done it before and know you can!
