"Next gun" for what? Are you using the .30-30 today on deer effectively? You're not having to take shots beyond 150 yards, only hunting deer-sized game? If so - I'd stick with what's already working for you.

If you want to have a couple rifles to choose from, I'd trade your .30-30 for a good .243 and MAYBE (if you ever hunt anything larger than deer) consider getting yourself a .30-06. Between the .243 and .30-06, there isn't a varmint or big game animal on this continent you wouldn't be perfectly equipped to handle.

Stick with your 30-30. Bigger is almost never better.

The 30-30 is the best short range deer gun IMHO

You don't say where you are hunting and the normal/extreme distances you will be shooting. The old proven 30/06 will handle most any distance, has a vast choice of different types of cartridges, and will take any game animal that 99%of theaverage hunter goes after. I would use it and if it doesn't already have a quality scope on it, then topping the 30-06 off with a quality scope would be my main objective. I prefer a bolt action, but the semi should be OK.
