Any old school deerhunters?

Raise your hands fellas if you are old school. Anyone hunt with a levergun? Better yet, an iron sighted levergun? Anyone hunt in an old flannel instead of a 300.00 camo suit? Anyone cook outdoors at camp on a Coleman stove, or even better an open fire?

This is not a knock on ANYONES style of hunting- just an innocent inquiry:)

My grandfather is 78 years old and he hunts with either a winchester 30-30 or 12 gauge shotgun, wears a flannel jacket and blue jeans. He doesnt put up extravagant stands with huge food plots and corn. He walks the woods until he finds a scrape then will build his own blind out of leaves and sticks. U can laugh but he has killed monster bucks doing that.

I use a savage model 99 lever gun. It would be old school if it didn't have a scope and wasn't a .308. I don't care for the high dollar hunting clothes and like the old flannel or Carhartt. Wish I could find my old down hat!

I don't know if you call it old school or not. I usually hunt in a Carhart coat, blue jeans, and old Lacrosse boots. Then top it off with the required blaze orange. We used to tent it out and cook over the fire or Coleman stove. Never used to use stands, just cleared a area around the tree of leaves down to the good smelling dirt and sat down. Never could use a lever action in Illinois being a no centerfire state but used my old 870. I guess I moved to the "new school" times now. Still wear the same cloths but I stay in a garage with a wood stove, TV, microwave, fridge, all the goodies. Have access to a shower in the house. We still cook on a grill though. I've learned to prefer my inline 50 cal muzzleloader over my shotgun, but the shotgun always makes the trip as a backup.

I hunt the ORIGINAL old school- with hounds- In a sweatshirt and jeans, with a shotgun and buckshot. No lever gun here though,semi-auto rifle.

I hunt both ways. It depends where I am hunting. At hunting camp we wear plaid wool and use lever guns and pump rifles. Some use scopes and some use open sights. Until the leaves drop you cant shoot very far (40 yards). Our camp is 20x24 with a cook stove, propane lights and a wood stove. We over look an adirondack pond and love every minuit of it. We will be headed there in a week and a half for a nine day hunt. I cant wait.

RE: Any old school deerhunters?

I've been able to do both, depending on where I'm hunting. In Missouri I use a tree stand and wear camo but I do use a Marlin 30-30 lever action that was my grandfathers but got passed down to me by my father. In Colorado, we set up camp about 8,000 feet up with no amenities other than your tent, sleeping bag, propane stove, and coolers of venison and beer. Don't have to wear camo up there usually and no tree stands. I actually hunted with my 30-30 which most people found odd because of the distances you have to shoot. Worked for me though!

im not but my granddad is...went huntin with him before, he does not hunt out of a tree stand walks around the woods till he finds a spot that looks good and sits on a nearby tree or stump. does not believe in scent control or camo...says its all a bunch of gimmics....takes his trusty iron sight 30-30 with him. if he shootsa deer well i just know how to describe how he guts and skins it...oh by the way he also shoots all of his deer in the head...doesnt want to waste the meat.

RE: Any old school deerhunters?

I know plenty of Ole Timers who hunt in the old wool jackets and pants, they kick the leaves up by a big tree or sit on a stump drinking coffee and smoking a cigar or cigarette. I have also seen them drag some monsters out of the woods too. I have fond memories of being at Deer camp with the ole timers watching them play poker, drinking beer, cussing, farting and having fun like many at camp do today. Who knows? I used to kill turkeys when I was a kid by calling them by mouth wearing jeans and a flannel shirt, no head net and gloves. Scentlok? My scentlok is standing in the dairy barn for 15 minutes to get the farm smell on me. I have had more deer walk so close I could knock em over the head with the barrel. Most of the ole timers would laugh at the fact of using scentlok. I still have my hand me down Marlin 30AS that has killed quite a few Deer. I have shot nice bucks but I am no horn hunter either. One of the memories that I have from one of the ole timers is a quote that I'm sure you have all heard " You can boil them horns all you want but it will never make any soup". I am a meat hunter and nothing more. So to answer your question...I'm not old school all to much but I will always remember what they taught me....Respect the game, the land and your fellow hunter and have fun at camp because it only comes once a year.

Old school here although It's not gun hunting. I hunt exclusively with a 14 year old recurve. My camo Is nothing to fancy either being It's all of 15 years old but It's very quite stuff. When I go bear hunting everything Is cooked over an open fire, there's no better way IMO! We tent It out In the middle of no where, motels aren't for me, this Is hunting, the way I see It fit for me.

I like where your head's at schultzy! Thats what I'm talking about. Nothing better than sitting by a fire, cooking your own stuff and being out in the wild.

By old school do you mean successful without the overpriced crap ? Count me in. If old school means I don't look like a posterboy for Cabelas...count me in. If old school means I hunt with ammo I make, guns I setup and tactics handed down of generations...count me in on that too.

LOL! Hey my brother in law (who carries a Browning BAR in .338 Win Mag) laughs hysterically at me because I carry a .30-30 and .32 Winchester Special in the woods. He callsthem "girl guns". Oddly enough he loses a deer almost every year because the recoil causes him to flinch and shoot it in the buttocks....

Good thread. Im so tired of trail cameras, deer cane, deer corn, short mags, ultra mags, light mags, game feeders, deer pee, bullet drop compensating scopes, sling sticks, cough silencers, real tree,JackieBushman, Team Primos, grunt calls, rattle bags, blah, blah, blah......

The nuts on here that post the pictures from their game cameras and say "what'll he score" drive me crazy. Whats worse are the knuckleheads that answer 160, 180........Give me a break.

The great thing about some of the so called old ways, is they are as effective as the "new" ways. What lacking is skill and more importantly, respect.

I have a 1950 marlin 35 rem that was made a year after I was born no scope open sights (that I can no longer see) But it is in like new condition It will be hunting with me this year.

I'm not quite as old school as some of you, but I do hunt witha scopedMarlin 336. I don't use a stand and I hunt public land usually knee deep in swamp and have seen more deer this way than ever did with a stand. Haven't killed anything, but I'm still working on the skills. I've also never killed a buck so I'm holding out for a set of antlers. Hopefully this will be my year.

I've got old school tendencies. Though I use a scoped bolt action, I chose a .30-06 in part because it's one of those "old reliables." Venerable cartridges that have done the job over and over appeal to me. I don't use scents or scentlock or wear camo. Instead, I wear a greyish plaid coat and black sweat pants pulled over a pair of blue jeans (a blaze orange vest and hatt, too FWIW).

I have thought of changing on the camoflage, especially the face. I think my face has tipped deer to my presence on a couple of occasions when deer got really close. A facemask and perhaps some blaze orange camo might be things I add.

Man, can I relate to THAT!! I leave tues. Morn, 1:00am for an 11 day hunt in the Adirondack St. Regis Primitive Wilderness Canoe Carry. No motor vehicles, no electric/battery engines; My Nirvana! Went in a week ago to set up camp. I believe I am hitting it this year at a PERFECT time this year, provided my rut theories once again hold true. Saw plenty of sign when I set up camp, plus snow in the forcast. I am going NUTS with anticipation!

I too old school it. Canvas wall tent-8x16-, mail box wood burning stove, etc. Compass and map{ no gps}. Wool, wool, and more wool. Green/black check, red/ black check, single shot .270 NE Arms.

I'll give you all a shout when I get back. CROKIT

Still like using the percussion cap muzzleloader while sitting on the ground........being out there is what it is all about, the kill is secondary to the pursuit....

Amen, Brother! ;)Most of the people the above describes will tell you with a straight face that they only hunt"mature/trophy" Bucks for the challenge and then use every available technological advantage at their disposal. Don't get me wrong, more power to them, i just seriously doubt the challenge aspect of their claims. I consider myself old school because my preferred method of hunting is from the ground, both sitting and still hunting and this goes for both firearm and bow. I almost never hunt from a stand and do not own any scent control clothing. I agree 100% with the post that "being out there is what it is all about, the kill is secondary to the pursuit....". The wind in my face and my old 870 Wingmaster with "foster style" slugs is all i need to enjoy a day in the Deer woods. If i manage to sneak up on a deer or have one get close enough while I'm on the ground to take it, that's just icing on the cake. :D

The last deer i killed, i was sitting in a stand made out of scrap lumber and wearing work clothes, and didn't have on any kind of scent or lure. I drug it out and loaded it in a pick-up without using a 4-wheeler, and then butchered it myself. I did have a shotgun with a slug barrel and a scope, so those were my concessions in terms of using toys.

RE: Any old school deerhunters?

Well with deer hunting no, but on the moose hunt, we hunt out of a small camp, that we have a tarp on the roof, box stove and bunk beds out of 2x4.

We do have a generator now for lights, use to be lantern, all cooking is over a 3 burner coleman stove.

Its pretty remote, and not really many amenities. I love it that way, and it makes the Hunt.

I want to build a deer camp, and start hunting that way up at our Lot, instead of driving 30 min back to my Parents house. Just doesn't feel as much like hunting

This is not me, but a picture of my dadwearing what he will go into the deer woods in. We tend to go really old school. I used to do it when I was younger, but he does historical reenacting and likes to wear his clothing into the deer woods. Come muzzleloader season we both take our traditional flintlock's with us. A good ol' patch and ball will put deer down pretty good. It can be a challenge if the weather is not cooperating. Trying to keep the pan dry is a constant battle, but it is a fun way to hunt. This is old school to the extreme if you ask me. :D

RE: Any old school deerhunters?

This year I'll be using a newly aquired Marlin 30-30 instead of my 270 or 308. The first deer Igot many yewars ago was with a Marlin 35 rem.I like to still hunt/stalk deer, and we also do small, slow silent drives (a combination of still hunting and drives).

And my gear isn't expensive, but it is comfortable and effective in cold weather. Last buck season, the lowest temp that we hunted in was 11 degrees. I've worn the same down vest for the last 30 or so years. Sometimes I even wear my Hollofill quilted long johns when it's really cold. They still do the job. I won't wear cotton shirts or long johns like we did many years ago. Cotton isn't effective, and it holds moisture.
