Easy Do It Yourself /European Mount

I tried this last year and it turned out great. Thought somebody else would like to try it.

1. Put your latex gloves on & Cut the head off at base of neck
2. Start skinning and removing anything you can get to
3. Careful not to gouge or scrape the skull or rack
4. Remove eyes, ears, toungue (everything!)
5. The more you leave the more work later
6. Cut with a serated saw a line going back following the plane of the upper teeth
7. Remove the lower jaw after sawing and anything below
8. All you have left is the Rack andskull including the upper jaw
with as little meat as possible left
9. If your cut was good you could remove some brain tissue( be careful)
10.Get a turkey frier pan or half barrel of some type and fill with water
IMPORTANT( you probably will not want to use this pan for food again)
11. Use your propane burner to boil the water
12. After water is boiling adda box of rock salt and some dish soap
13. Put skull in water leaving the rack out of the boil
14. Boil for3 to 4 hours
15.When done, take skull to car wash and power off any remaining debris
16. Be careful especially around the nose area and cartilage
17. Dry with a cloth
18. Wrap tightly, only the skull (not rack) in strips of an old bed sheet
19. Soak the cloth in Hydrogen Peroxide (don't get on rack!)
20. Put in a trash bag and let set for 72 hours
21. Unwrap your masterpiece ( It's just like Christmas)

Go to a resale shop or look at garage sales. I'll be willing to bet you can find an old fish fryer or something that will work. This may sound a little time consuming but it's worth it just to say you did your own.

I am trying something this year, much less steps than this tho....

Wrapped the antlers in a Bag, and berried the head (whole)

Going to wait till August next year, and take it out of the ground, dip in Peroxide or Bleach, and hang on the wall....Done :D

There is nothing wrong with that as long as the squirrels or mice don't find it before next August.

Bigman, You can do this. It's easy. Just take your time and enjoy it. Don't use your moms new pressure cooker though. She won't like it.

I'm working on one right now, a buddy of mine got a doe last weekend and I offered to do it for him for practice. the thing is i'm in college so i dont have much time/space to work on it, so i took a half hour tonight and skinned the head as best i could on the tailgate of my truck then wrapped it back up in saran wrap and bagged it to prevent it from stinking up the back of my truck. Luckily it isnt too warm here so i'm not too worried about it rotting, i may take it up north this wknd and just let it sit in water for a few weeks then scrape off everything. it's a little tougher with antlers, but it'll be good practice.

That’s a pretty good procedure.
I never tried the rock salt thing, and I don’t saw the lower half of the skull.
What I do for boiling, is get the water to a boil inside on my range, then carry it outside to the grill burner to add the skull, saves on propane and is a little quicker heat up.

I skin the head and then put the skull on an active ant bed. I cover it witha large bucket that I have that started it's life as a tree container and stake it down very good. In a few weeks the ants will have the skull cleaned out (eyes, brain, etc.) and then you do the wrap in a towel or sheet or whatever and soak it in peroxide. I also don't saw the jaw off. I leave the jaw on. The ants even eat the toungue out.

DON'T use bleach!

I used the peroxide that comes in a jell.Just put the skull in a plastic shoe box with the peroxide and use a small paint brush to get to places that are to high.

11. Use your propane burner to boil the water
12. After water is boiling adda box of rock salt and some dish soap All you need is regular salt and add hydrogen peroxide inpot
13. Put skull in water leaving the rack out of the boil To help with this wrap bottom of rack with aluminum foil
14. Boil for3 to 4 hours Or longer if meat remains rather than 15.
15.When done, take skull to car wash and power off any remaining debris Not the best idea in my experience
16. Be careful especially around the nose area and cartilage
17. Dry with a cloth No need to dry
18. Wrap tightly, only the skull (not rack) in strips of an old bed sheet I like to use cotton that you can buy in strips from Wal-Mart, they can be used multiple times
19. Soak the cloth in Hydrogen Peroxide (don't get on rack! Use foil)
20. Put in a trash bag and let set for 72 hours I like to use brownie pan about 2'x6" or so with sides a few inches high
21. Unwrap your masterpiece ( It's just like Christmas)

The red is just a few things differently I prefer. I have done 5 bucks and 1 barbado ram head. I have learned the ends and outs and its not as easy as it sounds. If you have a real good buck, its best not to use it until the 2 or 3 times (at least) that you have done it. Also I like to put bleach in the pot towards the end, really gets the skull white.
