I have the same shotgun as you I have shot deer at 100 yards I think it was luck, but 75 is about as far as I usually shoot, not to sure about a rifled slug all I shoot is buckshot.

I have a couple 870's, one has a 26" improved cylinder barrel and the other has a 30" full choke and the rule of thumb is the shorter the barrel, the better it shoots slugs. The 26" that I have can spit a slug out and hit a pie plate every time at 100 yrds. I'm not sure what a modified can do but go down to the range and cheque it out.

Go to the range and have some fun..

Every answer you'll get will be different. I was always told 75 to 100 max when I was younger....but with the new loads, who knows. I'm lucky enough to have a rifled barrel with Tru-Glo peeps on it. I'm pretty on to 150 with the Hornady SST sabs...aiming a tad high for some drop compensation.

No need of a rifled barrel shotgun. Smooth bore is just as good as the rifling in a shotgun will get filled with lead deposits. If you have interchangeable barrels put the improved cylinder on and you'll be impressed with the groups you get. Its easy too get pie size groups even with open sights at a 100 yrds..

I have a remington wingmaster 12ga that will shoot 3" groups all day at 100 yards with several different brands of rifled slugs and an open choke tube. My Mossberg will only get those kind of groups at about 75 yards or so. Every shotgun is different, so you just have to get out and shoot several different kinds of slugs to find out what shoots best and how far you can expect to hit with your gun.

I have a 20 gage Charles Daly pumperusing 3/4 oz rifled slugs that I shoot though a modified or improved cylinder choke, with that light a slug I wouldn't try anything over 100 yards.
