The best gun I ever shoot and used for deer would be a 270 win or a 7mm-08 rem. If I were to go out west and where it is a longer range country II my use a 270 WSM or the 7mm-08 Rem. Thats what I would use for deer. Ken Heilbrun Jr.

This should be another 10 pager. I use a Ruger .270. I've had it for years and have used it everywhere rifles are allowed. Here in Illinois I use my Reminton 870. Both I love and really have never thought about switching. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Well,
I think more Deer have been put in the freezer(as far as centerfire rifles go) with the classic 30/30, and 30/06 .
But my fave is my Savage .308 with a custom recipe and topped with a 150gr Ballistic Silvertip molly coated Nosler for ranges out to 300yrds, and if i'm brush hunting I just use a round nose.
Thing is with a .308 you can Varmint hunt with a 90gr bullet or take a Moose with a 200gr !

I hunt New England and it would depend on which area I decide to hunt. If I expect close shot while hunting thick, nasty, cedar swamps, I use my old Ruger .44Mag. If I expect more open, longer distance shots, I'll take my .308.

My two favorites are .270 and .25-06 not much difference in the two. I did however just purchase a Thompson Center Venture in .270 and I am shocked and impressed by the rifle. I normally hunt with a .25-06 Remington 700 Sendero it is extremly accurate. If your not familiar with that model in is a heavy barrel custom rifle that isn't cheap. The main draw back to the gun is it is VERY heavy and not good to carry very far. Well, when I saw the new TC Venture and its 1 inch MOA guarantee and I price tag of $425.00 I thought I would pick one up as a good rifle to scout with and carry. After I took it to the range I AM SHOCKED it shoots as good as my target rifle at 1/4 the cost. It has a great trigger, a match grade barrel, weighs slightly over 7 pounds and shoots as good as any rifle I have ever owned. TC has a winner on their hands and if you are looking for a good inexpensive (notice I didn't say cheap it is a quality gun) rifle there are none better. TC just changed the game with this gun
