Default My Youngest Boy's First Deer

This weekend was the Illinois Youth Firearm Season. It was alsoHunter's (my youngest boy)13th birthday. Me, my dad, and my two boys headed for the farm this morning in hopes of filling their youth tags. The more was pretty uneventful, a few does that would not come into range and some turkeys. The afternoon was hot (mid 80's) and I really did not like our chance of filling any tags. Right at dark, my youngest boy (who was sitting with my dad) was getting ready to climb down when they see a deer sneaking down the dry creek bed. Long story short, it was a spike buck and stepped out of the creek bed at 15 yards broadside. Hunter put a great shot on him, his 20ga lightfield hitting both lungs and the heart. The buck went 40 yards and piled up. This was Hunter's first deer and taking it on his birthday while hunting with his grandpa made it just so much better. Here are a couple of pics of the happy birthday boy.

Congrats - I have two boys and I'll never forget when they shot their first deer. I'm not sure who was more excited, them or me.

Good times

It's at moments like these when I think, Jesus, you're awesome! Gotta love memories from hunting trips with family, I shot my first deer last year hunting with my dad, a spike, and his one antler was broken off, but I couldn't have been more grateful. And it wasn't because I'm nota grateful person...

Congrats!
