RE: .270 vs 30-06

Here are the Ballistics...Very negliable between these 2 Cartridges when you are talking the same weighted bullet....The main difference is that you can go all the way up to a 220 grain bullet with the .30-06, and only up to 150 with the 270win. It would appear that the most "knock down power" or energy is to be had with a 180grain bullet with the .30-06.

Here are some stats for comparison.

GUN WEIGHT STYLE BRAND VELOCITY ENERGY 200 300 400 500
270 Win 150 part Rem 2850 2705 -3.5 -12.6 -28.5 -52.3
30-06 Spfld 150 bp Rem 2910 2820 -3.4 -12.9 -29.6 -55.2

Actual energy is not really that much higher than with a 150 grain bullet mind you.....only 17lbs more energy.

30-06 Spfld 220 sp Rem 2410 2837 -6.2 -22.4 -51.7 -98.3

The most energy seems to be the 180 grain bullet, hitting 3300 ft/lbs

30-06 Spfld 180 part Fed HE 2880 3315 -3.3 -12.3 -27.6 -50.6

the reason i like the .270 is -- its easy on the shoulder which in return the shooter will have better form and hit the bullseye a little more often.

Both are great. I just bought a 270 because the rifle that I wanted would have had to been ordered to get it in an 06. 270 is alittle flatter and 06 can offer bigger bullets.. so its pretty much 6 of one and half dozen of the other in my opinion

Both will probably do the job for you just fine, but I prefer the 30-06. You can get factory loads from 125gr all the way up to 220gr. If you want to handload you can go all the way down to 55gr (actually I think Remington makes a 55gr load).

30-06 for the range of grains to pick from! I own a remington myself.

the 30-06 is the obvious choice. Larger bullet selection better heavy bullet ballistics, availbiltyin different rifles. Its identical to its youngerbrother the .270 from case capacity, recoil and so on. Why choose a .270 when you have a 30-06. That said the .270 is a just plain awsome calibler.

We get some really heavy bodied bucks in the thick wooded areas in northern Minnesota. I've been extremely happy with myRem 700 in .30-06. Last year I shot a 260 pound 8 pointer that dropped dead on the spot. Just last Saturday I shot a 250 pound 9 pointer that went 5 yards. See photos.

RE: .270 vs 30-06

Nothing wrong with the .270, but I like the 06. Maybe it's because it was my first center-fire rifle, maybe it's the history of the round, maybe it's the availability of a wide variety of factory ammo, I'm not sure. For a while, I entertained the idea of getting a 7-08, but after I sold my 760, I realized I missed having the 06 around. My next rifle will be a bolt action 06.
