RE: How do i hunt him
Based on your drawing, this is what I would do, I would set up my blind in between the harvested corn and bean fields in the little wood strip (if thats what the dark green line is between the two). This will give you a good chance to see him in either direction from a distance so he doesnt just "show up" on you and you are unprepared. you can set up on either side fo the trail depending on the wind. Not sure how far the barn is from the trail either, but if its within gun range, utilize that to help you stay covered as well. I would use a doe in estrous bleat to try and draw him closer to you when the rut is starting to get into full swing. Check your DNR regulations about mineral licks and things like that before you put one out. Good luck and be sure to post picks of the brusier once you get him. |
RE: How do i hunt him
I kinda get the same idea as The Outdoorsmen, I would also check around the aera for a rub line or some good fresh scrapes. Depending on if your hunting with a gun or bow would make a big difference. If your bow hunting I would find a funnel along the trial and set up about 20 yard off that. I see that you have seen him more around the corn, Try to find a place where he seems to be comming into that area. But don't forget once the rut starts all patterns are null and void.. Have you seen where the does are hanging out the most? I belive to get a big Buck you gotta hunt the does.. Good luck.

RE: How do i hunt him
well the barn is about 120 yards (we got a cuple horses in it)from that blue spot but i hunt with a shotgun maybe bow i dont got 1 yet but i didnt want to sit in that tree line with a gone because the area to the right of the picture (but not shown in it)is also a been feild but some idiot walks out there smoking and making a ruckus when he hunts during shotgun season also THE OUTDOORSMAN- that green line is pretty open come the late fall i can see the road easy from there so i dint want to shot a car or even the couple house BTW light green-grass, dark green-treelines

RE: How do i hunt him
Yes but if you hunt the tree line between the corn and bean field, your shot should be going towards the bottom of the picture. as well, trying hunting in the tree line on the right side of the picture if the wind is favorable. The fields are big enough that if you set up in the woodline between both fields in your drawing, you should have plenty of shooting opportunities without you risking a shot at a car or house. as for the hunter that smokes and makes all the noise, thats good, he will just push the deer in your direction.

RE: How do i hunt him
i feel like you should also hunt where you can see both fields. as for apples ive always heard that food that isnt around a big smart deer may be alarmed but never seen proof of it. corn will work for the deer. if you dont get him this year consider food plots clover for all year and winter peas and turnips for fall just some stuf to think about good luck

RE: How do i hunt him
ok guys thanks for the tips ill keep ya posted

RE: How do i hunt him
I agree with outdoorsman. I would set up in between the two harvested feilds. I would check regs in your area before putting out corn.

lucky you! a north west wind will work real well if you set up a ground blind in that hedge row between the two fields and hes usin that trail (red line)

RE: How do i hunt him
well since your in SW Ohio, and I hunt in Switzerland Co. in SE Indiana, I will just come over and show you how to hunt him. :D Seriously, right now I would do some lite tickling of a rattle bag and maybe a grunt here and there, that may strike his curiosity to see who the new guy is in the area.In a couple of weeks I would try to use a doe in estrous bleat once every few hours, but dont use it right now, its too early. wait for a few weeks and let it get closer to nov. If he is the dominate buck in the area, he should come to some lite tickling of a rattle bag right now, dont make it a full out fight. mimic two younger bucks wrestling around, sparing.I would also check the fields at first light and at last light and get a feel for where he is at. Not sure when you have seen this buck (time of day) but my guess will be an evening hunt.

RE: How do i hunt him
you should pay close attention to the fields at last light to see if he is out there, if so, you can get him in the evening, if not, it seems that a morning hunt is your best option. Is there a good set of woods that he is coming from??? Are you able to hunt those woods? Trying to intercept him on his way to the fields at last light is an option but you have to know when he is heading to the field, if its not until after legal shooting hours, then you might have to call to get him to come earlier.

RE: How do i hunt him
that looks like a pretty good shot but how far is it from the blind to the trail
|
RE: How do i hunt him
maybe 20-25 yards
|
RE: How do i hunt him
So have you hunted the area yet? Any sightings of the buck again? Any success?

RE: How do i hunt him
Your blue dot looks like a likly spot as does the green east-west strip between the fields if the wind is out of the east-north.
Here in Iowa, the winds tend to be at least partly out of the west. I can't tell by your drawing if there is a north-south fence line on the east edge of the property. If there is, I would use it for a bit for breakup cover north of where the trail enters the corn field. It looks like you should be able to shoot towards the west or south from there, the spacing around the buildings should be ok from a half mile away. Just keep them in mind when you shoot. Hunting from the east edge of the property should give you more wind direction options. Bob |
RE: How do i hunt him
I'd spend some time out there, figuring out what trail the BUCK uses, not the trail the does use, because bucks often use lightly ued trails that kind of parallel heavily used doe trails.
I'd look for rubs on 1-2 inchtrees along a lightly used buck trail, figure out what time of day the buck uses that trail on the property you hunt, and setup downwind, or at least crosswind, of the trail and hunt it when the wind is right, whenver it is the bucks uses it most frequently. I'm going to aks T.R.Michels if I can post hsi article on Patterning bucks over here, he posted it on his forum.Look for the topic "The Best Way to Hunt a Buck". |
RE: How do i hunt him
I have a spot real similar to what you are describing. I hunt it off the ground out of a Double bull. I have deer daily at under 40 yards. I would put the blind up and leave it they won't even paya bit of attention to you. I had 5 bucks come by this morning and never even looked in my direction.
