Safety Vest...If you fall without one on and injure yourself it really doesn't matter how many other cool gadgets you have if you can no longer use them.

climbing tree stands. never used a safety harness and never will. Use common sence and you won't fall out of a tree.

RE: What would you say

never say never. I am very safe. What happens when your equipment fails, for example a weld pops. It happened to me and luckily I didn't fall but had one hell of a time shimming my way down the tree. I used to have your opinion until then and especially now that I have a little one at home to come home to.

Cheap and simple insurance policy for me.

I agree... safety first. I would never trust stands alone. Ive read too many articles and seen too many movies

850 acres of farm land, currently planted in corn, soybeans and peanuts...:D

After that...A good, quality climbing tree stand...I have 2-APIs and I'm old enough that I started when we didn't have climbers, my first was a Baker...I'm lucky to have lived through that...

After that...:D...Most recently...A Thermacell...I don't care how tough you are, the mosquitoes we have down South, especially in our swamps make hunting miserable in the early season...

I like how u said use common sence an u wont fall. i dont care how much common sence u have u can still fall. i dont carfe how my time u have used ur stand to clime that tree or how many times u have put that ladder stand there u can still fall.i learned my lesson a few years ago with that out look on them. swore i would never use one but i tell ya i use one now.So i would have to say my harness is my best investment

the correct/comfortable clothing for the weather, its hard to enjoy a hunt if your cold/hot wet or miserable

here during archery season its not uncommon to be hunting in 70 degree weather[:@], and i have hunted up north where king of the mountain wool was the order of the day;)

Not specifically, but some of my best investments in hunting have been those items that I didn't go cheap on. I feel like I am leaning away from my father's advice to be extremely conservative, and have been able to realize that "you get what you pay for" in most instances and this has never been so true, especially with hunting gear! Don't get me wrong, I am not likea woman in Abercrombie or AE, noshot at cupcake, but when it comes to my hunting gear, I make a decision as to whether this is something I ought to go cheap on and more often than not anymore, I go with the top notch or next best model........hence top notch, Mathews bow....hahah j/k.

My hunter safety system is one of the best investments for sure though.

I would have to say you better knock on wood (your head?). You can't control the unexpected. I have been guilty of not wearing one, but i started to and will always wear one now. My friend told me one day he was hunting and got caught up on the hunt. The deer came under his stand he was shooting at with his pump and aiming straight down at it and lost his balance and before he knew it he was looking up, suspended from the tree........Glad he had his vest one..

Indiana Lifetime Comprehensive Hunting License, best $855 I ever spent. I write my own tags, I don't have to pay for licenses ever again, and the license remains valid even if I were to move out of state. [8D]

I will invest next year in lifetime if I enjoy hunting this year. No doubt I will but I wasnt going to take that chance and end up not liking it. Also Im tired of having to buy a fishing license every year.
As well next year when I purchase, I will purchase my daughter one. Shes a big outdoors fan!!

My time. No amount of gear can make up for the time you spend in the woods and the experience you gain. Some of the best hunters I know go into the woods with there grandpa's 30-06, Flanel shirt, blue jeans, and a buck knife, and come out with the biggest bucks and bulls that are taken for the season. The reason for this is the time they have spent knowing the terrain, and understanding the animal they are after in a way you can't obtain from a magazine or 1/2 hour tv show. Now with saying that I also admit to being a gear junky, and we are both blessed and burdened with the shear volume of gear that is available to hunters these days.

Time

time to learn to hunt safe
time to learn to handload my own ammo
time to shoot my rifles and learn how they shoot with many combinations of bullets
time to teach my son to hunt with me
time to meet and hunt with my sister and brother in law....providing huge amounts of hunting access and lots of experience
time to spend teaching new hunters the how, where and whys

Like already said, not using a saftey harness isalso not using common sense.

Quality clothing to keep me warm and dry. It allows me to spend more time on stand when I need to be.

i shoulda said a nice pair of boots... if you walk alot they will save you. Plus, if your feet are happy and warm, you will stay in the woods 3 times as long

I was going to say a bow, these days gun camp is more of a great time with a great bunch of guys, but if I really want a hunt I grab my bow. But, I agree with you cupcake, the investment of time is one of the best responses that I have read in the 8 yrs I've been on this site.
I know a guy like that, he couldn't afford a call if he wanted one, but every year its no surprise when he hangs the biggest buck, or somehow brings back a bear that he shot while walking out to a deer stand; he grew up doing it, I could read books and watch hunting shows for years and not understand whats happening in the bush like he does.

Doesnt have anything to do with common sense. Its the fact that the machinery can fail. No body gets up in a stand and sits there while thinking to themselves " I think Im going to take a little joy fall for the heck of it". Negative. If more and more people die from tree stands without having a safety harness, I can only foresee the hunting laws changing. Just as being in a vehicle... you must wear your safety belt your you geta ticket. You know the saying... "Click it or ticket" lol

Not wearing a safety harness, like others have said anything can and will happen out in the woods the more your out there hunting the more somthing could go wrong .So if you won't do it for yourself do it for your family. And remember the old saying the DOC use to say PAY ME NOW OR PAY ME LATER IT'S UP TO YOU .
