any hunting shows worth watching?
it rained most of the weekend here in north east alabama, so i found myself sitting around watchin hunting shows most of the time. i noticed, none of them starred a man who just got done working a 50 hour week and only had about 4 hours to hunt saturday evening because he had to get home and take care of his kids. where are the shows for people who cant afford ranch hunts or high dollar leases? if there are any, let me know, it might rain again next weekend.

It seems that, for some reason, the producers of those shows think that all anybody wants to see is big racks on their deer. They also think that the hosts of these shows need to be funny but most come off looking like idiots. Id like to see a show where they just hunting the land and give tips and information about the hunt, and if somehow that becomes funny then great, but dont make the hosts force it. My new least favorite show has to be McMillan River Adventures - cant stand the host.
Sorry for the ramble guys, but its getting late for me. |
RE: any hunting shows worth watching?
I used to like watching Ted Nugent hunt. One of his movieswas the first time I had ever saw a doe shot on camera. I look back on it now and it seems like no big deal, but back then that was something really different. I remember thinking "Wow, I can't believe they showed that on there". And the amazing thing to me was how happy he was about it. To me, that said a lot. I thought I had finally found a "TV hunter" who hunted like I did. And I was excited when he got his own show, and the first season wasn't bad... From the second season on it's another story.
Now it's a 20 minute theme song and one high fenced hunt in Texas over bait. I like watching The best and worst of Tred Barta now. In the few times I've watched the show I don't think I've seen him kill anything, but he's the only hunter on TV that I know of that hunts with a longbow. |
RE: any hunting shows worth watching?
I'll watch anything with greg miller, Stan Potts, Eddie Sadler, and Pat reeves. All of them are big deer hunter i know they don't work 50 hour weeks, but i really enjoy watching them especially Greg and stan, they actually take some time to educate....

All you guys who want to see Jimbob down the road shoot a dink buck after work should all go out and make your own videos. Then pitch your shaky, fuzzy footage of a forkie being shot to the hunting shows and see how hard they laugh at you.
Common sense should tell you that a guy working 50 hrs a week, has kids & gets only a couple hours a week to hunt is NOT going to be able to make a video. Demand all you want, but you aren’t going to get it, unless you are superman and do it yourself. |

Not any new ones, they all are way too concerned with showin off their equipment and jazzin up the lines tryin to make it funny. Well, they aren't funny, just corny. The only hunting shows I will watch are OLD VHS tapes of guys huntin back in the 80's and early 90's. They concentrate on actually hunting, and even though they aren't meaning to be funny, they will constantly crack you up with some of the things they say.....especially videos from southern hunters that are straight from the backwoods. It'll keep you laughing, but if you find the right one, you will actually learn a few things even though the video is very old. I don't learn a damn thing from videos today, they are worthless. Last night a buddy and I watched one of Roger Ragland's videos from the late 80's, those rednecks are hilarious and know how to find a sure enough dominant buck in an area. They take you along with em on scouting trips, stand placement, and great footage of a hunt.........actually longer than 2 minutes unlike todays shows. The biggest buck they killed was about a 120" 8 point. They killed a messed up rack cull 3 point, a broken main beam 7 point, a 6 point, and a doe. They were all so damn excited it was funny, but hell they hunted for meat and for enjoyment of what God gave em, not to see which rich yankee can out-do the other with their pretty little bows and neat little toys. Go ahead and pick fun at JimBob and other hard working hunters mr. rybo, half of them would out-hunt you on your best day and their worst daybud. Today's stuff sucks, and you can tell Waddell and his buddies I said that.

QDMA has pretty good info. :)

RE: any hunting shows worth watching?
i like Deer and Deer Hunting. They always show a hunt and then examine and rate the arrow placement then go back to the hunt. After that they always seem to have informative information on different subjects. Always have to listen to Charles Alsheimer.

I’m not picking on Jimbob or any other hunter with a real job as I am one too. All I am saying is that the guys who put the stuff on TV don’t want the average hunter. That’s not what pays the bills. And secondly, for an average joe to make videos, hold down a job and still have a family life, is a HUGE undertaking. A few guys manage to pull it off, but not many because of the amount of work. And just as another friendly tip, I suggest you try to fully comprehend what is written before you go ranting & spouting off like a toddler. |
RE: any hunting shows worth watching?
im not sayin take a guy directly away from a welding machine and stick him in the woods still smellin like acetylene and burnt metal and expect him to drop a nice buck, im sayin if theyre gonna live the dream and hunt for a liveing, what shows are out there where they actually hunt? the ones ive seen lately, whitch are few, they drive out to a food plot on a high dollar ranch, climb up in a truck stand and hunt. i would love to do what they do and it would be nice to kill the grade of deer that they do, but for people at home who cant afford the hunts they go on, its kind of heartbreaking.

RE: any hunting shows worth watching?
I think the Primos "Truth" series are by far the best hunting shows out there. Granted they get to hunt in a lot of places most ppl never get the chance to hunt, but you see them shoot a lot of 130" -140" deer (which i think is at least a realistic possibility for most ppl in most places, i've never got one that big but they are out there) and are truly excited about it. Nothing annoys me more then the contrived, "boy that was exciting" recovery scenes you see on most shows. I like that almost all of the shots are right over the shooter's shoulder. Finally, they just seem like really good guys, they are always laughing and joking with each other. If you don't want to buy the videos or don't get the outdoor channel you can also watch clips and episodes on their website.

RE: any hunting shows worth watching?
In Pursuit with Greg Miller is very good. He actually teaches you stuff - even stuff you never even thought of. ;)
Real Tree Roadtrips with Michael Waddell is a hoot. He's just a regular guy who likes to hunt. Real Tree Monster Bucks is also good, but, sometimes it can get repetitive - same ranches, same ol' same ol'. Archers Choice with Ralph and Vickie is fun to watch. They crack jokes on each other and shoot some big deer too. Ted Nugent's Spirit of the Baitpile is so-so. He needs to do a show on public land showing scouting, selecting a tree for a stand, etc... Tred Barta? Um - let's justsay "NO". How that pompous arrogant windbag got a show is beyond me. [:'(] |
RE: any hunting shows worth watching?
i was watchin one the other day on the outdoor channel and the guy was hunting in "ole" mexico, tryin grunt calls, and had a decoy out and everything, the deer could careless about that nonsense. the decoy fell over and he got out of the blind (which was a pop up prolly from a sponser that he was hunting in while they had a huge nice elevated blind right behind him[&:]), walked up to it and set it up and the deer never even budged.[:'(]
talk about fish in a barrel, on top of that he shot one and went crazy saying how good his gun and camo and ammo were what helped bring the deer down. made me wanna slap him |
RE: any hunting shows worth watching?
i hate those shows where you after the shot the hunters put on this fake excitement routine, and make themselves look like an ass. don't you wish sometimes you could reach through the screen and coldcock these people?[:@]
