I can save you some time and money. The secret is to hunt wherebig bucks live: Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Kansas, Saskatchewan. You will be a much better hunter if you hunt there.

Ya.

I hunted for 12 years in Indiana, including my own private woods bordering 1 square mile of wetland thickets, prime habitat. During that 12 years I took zero P&Y's.

I started hunting heavily pressured public land in Illinois, some in Iowa& Kansas. Then I moved to Illinois 2 years ago. I have taken 5 P&Y class bucksin the last 5 years.

Quality state management makes a difference. Very limited gun rut seasons in the trophy states. Pretty simple.

Actually deer and antler size has more to do with being farther north and soil fertility/food supply.

I think the book is about deer hunting, not deer size. There is a lot of great deer hunting all over the country, but there are definitely regions where the bucks' antlers get bigger than other areas, and it has some to do with management, but not altogether so.

Calcium rich soil also has a possitive effect upon larger antler growth.

Guess I classify myself as a trophy Whitetail hunter. I won't even take the saftey off unless I'm pretty sure he's 150 class or better. I love hunting Iowa(when I can draw a tag)but concentrate most of my efforts in Kansas...... So,I guess I would have to agree with Jim. Nutrition and Genetics are essential, but I think the reason that trophy opportunity exists in IA and KS is because there is not a hunter behind every tree. Bucks have a chance to reach the age classification that will lend itself to trophy anlter potential. Let 'em grow up!
