Does Skoal Apple really attract deer?

Ok, so I've heard this a lot lately. People claim that they have actually had deer stop under their treestand to smell their spit.Maybe it's a stupid question, but if it works, why the hell not? I work for USSTC, so I get a lot of free samples, and I might try it in a few months.

I have heard of people doing this. But i dont think it works. Skoal citrus was the only thing i had, and before i left the woods i took my spit bottle and emptied out the citrus spit in front of my game came. And I had a few pics of deer but it didnt look like anything of them stopped. They just kept on goin.

I don't care what type of tree I am in. I still won't hit the frame from it!! Just don't like apples. But if there are deer under it I am in it!

Don't know about that, BUT I do know Kayak Grape flavor works.....

eeuucckkkk Kayak grape? I'm a big dipper ofskoal straight, but when I'm huntin I chew Levi Garrett. The sweeter tobacco smell gets em curious I know for a fact, I've seen it. Obviouslyyou can get way more tobacco juice out of chew than dip, so there's lessactual saliva in it when it hits the ground, its mostly thick tobacco juices. I've seen deer walk under my stand and lick a spit pile for a good 20 to 30 seconds and not spook. It masks your breath and mouth scent very well too. I was bow-huntin public land with a buddy last year and we had a nice 8 and a little basket6 come check out our two spit piles. They spooked after my buddy lost his balance trying to stand up. Not promoting tobacco b/c it'll rot your teeth for sure, but I think chew gets em curious more than half the time.

If there are not any apple trees in the area you hunt then the apple smell would simple be forgien to them. Can't see how it would work.

Have you really ever smelled Skoal Apple? This was on here a few months ago, so I went out and bought to try it. First, yuck, just gross tasting. Second, it did not smell anything like apple. I chew in the stand, Kodiak, I spit in a bottle and take it out with me.

i think it has to do with it being an unnatural smell. deer will stop and smell anything different in an area to investigate whether it means danger or not.

two stories, with cherry skoal.....

1. I used to spit out of my stand 4-5 years ago when I was stupid and didn't care about scent. I was bowhunting and as I was taking off my safety strap at the end of the night I heard something coming into my stand real fast. I slowly put an arrow back in the bow and turned around.A black bear came in and sat right under my stand where I was spitting. I had to drop my quiver on his back to get him to leave.

2. I am now smarter and keep a bottle in my inside pocket of my camo for a spitter. It keeps the scent sealed off and I rarely get winded. This year during the rut I was hunting this one buck who I saw a few times and had on my camera. I did some aggressive rattling mid-morning and the buck came out of the thick, crashing right towards me. I thought the deal was sealed when he stoppedcoldbehind a spruce tree about 40 yards away so we couldn't see each other. There was just a little wind that was swirling. He then took off the other way faster than he came in. I couldn't figure out what happened until I took my camo off at the cabin. My spitter bottle cracked and was leaking all over me under my outer layer of clothes, and I didn't know it.

TO SUM UP MY EXPERIENCES WITH CHERRY (NOT APPLE) SKOAL:BEARS LOVE IT AND BUCKS HATE IT!

That is a great story JT. Why scare the bear away? I could have sat all day watching him!

apparently ya'll don't have bear problems like we do...lol. also, atleast around here, if there is a bear in the area you can pretty much count on not seeing any deer.

I don't know if its the smell or not but I don't think I would just leave the top off my can to find out.

We definetly don't have any beer problems where I hunt in illinois. I have been hearing that they are startign to have some problems at my property in WV. Not really sure if it is a huge problem or just people over exagerating. Would love to see and get a chance to shoot one though!

too many bunny huggers with deep pockets here in Florida. i don't think they'll ever open a season here in central Florida where we need it.

I have a friend that is atimate that the deer love his apple skoal and I have seen a couple of pictures that he has taken with his camera phone. He says he has had one deer lick the stuff right off his stand steps. I don't chew but if i did i just may give at a try.

Skoal apple is what I chew on a daily basis. I havent noticed any changes or anything with the deer. In fact I think I have seen less deer since I started chewing.

It is definetly an interesting thought. Not sure that it would really work but almost tempted to give it a try just to see.

Not that i've noticed. I was on a apple binge for like a year after it came out and spit on the ground I cant tell where it helps at all. I've long since moved on from skoal apple. To me the deer dont seem to notice the smell I hunt off the ground spit in the same spot and always soak it down with scent killer after i've enjoyed a dip. Haven't noticed where it's hurt me yet.

Grizzly wintergreen doesn't seem to bother them, I've shot deer the last 2 years while I was chewing. I've never really thought about it spooking deer but after I've read about people spitting in bottels in the woods im sure I'll reconsider spitting on the ground this year. I'd say Skoal apple attracting them is a myth, it doesn't really smell like natural apples, so I'd say if it "attracts" them it attracts them just as much as any other flavor.

I would have to agree. Skoal Apple doesnt smell like apples. Someone mentioned earlier in the post that if you didnt hunt an area with apple trees the deer would be smelling a foreign smell. I would have to agree that this new smell may put them on high alert.

RE: Does Skoal Apple really attract deer?

i guess it makes sense. deer like apples...tobacco is a vegetable...why not. i hate skoal apple with the intesity of 10 hellfires but i spit my wintergreen all over the place and haven't noticed deer being any more wary. i think they're just naturally curious, but smart enough to know to be extra alert when they go in to check stuff out (there might be a bad man looking to kill and consume them).
