RE: Deer Hunting With a .308
In my opinion the .308 is enough to take any game in North America if you know where to put the bullet and are not shooting really large game at extreme distances. It has plenty of bullet weight, plenty of velocity and has really good long range capabilities as far as accuracy goes.
I personally feel the .270, .308 and 30-06 are a bit overkill for most deer hunting situations, but that isn't always a bad thing. The .308 is just an awesome versatile round that has been around forever with tons of ammo and guns to shoot it from.
I own a .243 right now, and if I were to get a larger caliber for something it would either be a .308 or .270. I just can't see me hunting anything large enough that either of those two wouldn't kill at ranges I would feel comfortable shooting at.
