RE: Deer Hunting With a .308
I have hunted with a Savage 99 C in 308 win for about 43 years. Taken whitetail, mule deer, moose and antelope. Mainly i use a Rem. 150grn psp. One shot is all it has eve taken on any one of the aforementioned game animals.

RE: Deer Hunting With a .308
I see the .308 and the .270 as perfect deer calibers. Its a pleasure to shoot (very low recoil)
|
RE: Deer Hunting With a .308
I've used the .308--great caliber.Now I hunt with a 7mm/08--another great deer cartridge

RE: Deer Hunting With a .308

RE: Deer Hunting With a .308
In my opinion the .308 is enough to take any game in North America if you know where to put the bullet and are not shooting really large game at extreme distances. It has plenty of bullet weight, plenty of velocity and has really good long range capabilities as far as accuracy goes.
I personally feel the .270, .308 and 30-06 are a bit overkill for most deer hunting situations, but that isn't always a bad thing. The .308 is just an awesome versatile round that has been around forever with tons of ammo and guns to shoot it from. I own a .243 right now, and if I were to get a larger caliber for something it would either be a .308 or .270. I just can't see me hunting anything large enough that either of those two wouldn't kill at ranges I would feel comfortable shooting at. Paul |
RE: Deer Hunting With a .308
308 Great Caliber.
|
RE: Deer Hunting With a .308
It is one of the most purchased and used calibers of all time.... what does that tell you.
And it is good enough for anything on this continent. Including Elk...... MET |
RE: Deer Hunting With a .308
Time tested with thousands of kills. Plus you might be able to get a lot of military surplus ammo cheap for busting targets.
|
RE: Deer Hunting With a .308
I just bought a Browning A-bolt stainless hunter in .308. I also have a target rifle VTR in .308 but never hunted with it. I was just wondering on how it performed in the game hunting world. Thanks for your replies!!

RE: Deer Hunting With a .308
The .308 Winchester is one of the best hunting rounds for a whitetail deer.
|
RE: Deer Hunting With a .308
i didn't think you could kill a deer with anything other than a magnum:eek:

ORIGINAL: spikebuck77 The .308 Winchester is one of the best hunting rounds for a whitetail deer. The .308 has been around for years and years. I've heard it put like this: "If it's good enough as a NATO military round, then itsure as heck can "wear civvies" and take any game animal on the continent." [8D] |

RE: Deer Hunting With a .308
One of the best ALL ROUND calibers there is. You won't be dissappointed!

RE: Deer Hunting With a .308
Ive been using a .308 for years. Ive shot many rifles and shotguns over the years and foudn the .308 to be a great all around gun. Ive only had one that didnt drop in his tracks.

RE: Deer Hunting With a .308
One word to define a .308 on whitetail deer - Sweet.
Wehave used a .308 and have been sucessful from 20-150 yds with the deer never taking another step. No blood trail to rack, no deer running wounded through the woods. Practice and more practice, plus being confident in your shot is paramount. |
RE: Deer Hunting With a .308
The 308 SUCKS.
I personaly prefer to use my Gammo pellet gun in .22 caliber. I try to keep the range under 300 yards and only shoot for the eye. the 308 is a very good caliber. |
RE: Deer Hunting With a .308
My dad hunts with the .308. It is a great caliber, puts a nice hole in the deer which is not to big or not to small
|
RE: Deer Hunting With a .308
It is a great round that has spawned the 7mm/08, 260and 243. Which are probably as good if not better for deer as well. IMO, I would use the 243 for deer and lopes, 7mm/08 for Mulies and Elk and 308 for anything larger.. But that is just because I have a rifle in each caliber and I really hate to leave one in the safe too long before I use them.. I wouldn't want them to feel neglected.. :D

RE: Deer Hunting With a .308
Wow, this rifle I bought is making me feel better and better, I think I'm in love!!

RE: Deer Hunting With a .308
Now you just need to get a quality scope and you will be set.

ORIGINAL: rustydale Wow, this rifle I bought is making me feel better and better, I think I'm in love!! I bought mySavage 110 in .308 used and then put a nice Bushnell 3-9x40 scope on it. Once I got the scope zeroed in, I went back to the range with a buddy of mine who has a real nice stable bench rest. We locked the Savage .308 into his bench rest and at 100 yards, my rifle printed a 3 round cloverleaf dead center in the bullseye. I couldn't believe it... The he suggested going 4 clicks up on elevation, so it's now 1" high at 100 yards. Long story short, the .308 is anincredibly accurate, legendary, round. Heck, military snipers still usethe 7.62 NATO (.308) and have done so for years and years. [8D] |
RE: Deer Hunting With a .308
I use mostly my 30-06 for deer hunting, but I have also used the .308 occasionally. Both are good caliber for about anything.

RE: Deer Hunting With a .308
I hate to break the trend of compliments, but I have to knock the .308
Once you buy one, its hard to justify buying anything else for North American game. A man cant have to many fishing poles or long guns.....;) Scott |
RE: Deer Hunting With a .308
I have one. It's a really good caliber, but I still prefer my .270. I still take my .308 out occasionally though. I have killed quite a few deer with it and if it weren't for the .270, it would be my to go gun. The .308 is a great choice.
|
RE: Deer Hunting With a .308
i see that the 308,270,and the 243 for hunting bc they r light guns to hunt and are you dog hunttin or still hunting
|
RE: Deer Hunting With a .308
I just recieved my scope from ups yesterday!!! It is a Nikon Prostaff 3x9x50 silver. Now for the one piece stainless leupold base and silver high rings, and I'm set.
|
RE: Deer Hunting With a .308
The 308 is an exceptional round, which will do you fine for deer hunting. I myself shoot 30-06 Springfield because I'd rather pack too much punch than not enough.
