With a 12 gauge and a case of slugs!

Theres not much to do except to get rid of the deer. Putting up a fence would be useless, as a healthy deer could easily clear a fence 8 feet in height.

Good Luck on your paper;)

When they' re hungry they eat. When they' re sleepin their not eatin. The trick is to put them asleep permanently, get my drift. Bow,Shotgun,Rifle or Muzzleloader all of the above will get the job done. You also need a current Hunting License.

Go to a barber shop and get a bunch of hair...They will have a lot im sure, and spinkle that stuff everywhere...I' d say that it would work, unless its around a place where the deer are used to humans, but it still might work...OR...

Im sure a bunch of guys on here would love to hunt some down for you..lol

Human hair, blood meal etc, etc will only work for a short duration. If you are talking about acres of fields....my suggestion would be a crop damage permit.

If you are talking about a standard garden plot what I have done for years works!

Place the 6 foot wooden or metal garden stakes about every 6-10 feet around the perimeter of your garden. Get 20lb test clear fishing line and wrap around the stakes.......using an x pattern, also going horizontally several times.....the deer will feel the test line and not know what it is .....they will not cross it. Leave yourself an entrance though...:) Then the addition that really makes it work is Irish Spring Soap!! I usually cut the bars in half tie a piece of fishing line around each piece...or you can use cut up panty hose to put the soap into...... place the soap on each and every post and in between tying it to the fishing line. I have used this method for the past 20 years, and live in a very high density area for deer......
My son and I eat what I grow.......not the deer. It works.....;)

the frickin deer busted our fishing line. they didnt seem to care it was there. though the soap has kept them off a couple of pine trees they were rubbing

I like Irish Spring soap but Dial works well too. If you' re just protecting a few trees hanging deodorant soap from a branch at deer nose level has worked 100% for me. The bars last about a year before they need replacement. Other people spray soap solution on the trees for the same effect.

If you' re trying to keep deer out of a large area go to a company called" Forestry Supplies" . They sell deer repellant that can be sprayed over larger areas.

The stuff Dan O mentioned from Forestry Suppliers is called Deer Off, ph. 800-647-5368. Catalog item #17084, it cost $115 per gallon. 32 oz covers up to 4,000 sq. ft. and is safe for crops, suppose to last up to 3 months. Not sure if it would be feasible.

If you invite me over where the problem is I can help show what and hoe to take care of them:)

timbercruiser; I was talking about catalogue item #17041. It' s $29.25 for a gallon of concentrate. It' s still pricey but I guess it could be worth it depending on what you' re trying to protect. If someones trying to protect a field of corn they better buy a doberman.

I' d just shoot them...;):D[&:]

All kidding aside, if a landowner goes through the proper channels, he' s able to harvest them through hunting....I' ve heard of men in KS being issued up to 5 buck tags and 25 doe tags per year to stop deer from destroying their crops (of course, he owns a majority of a couple counties, so several different herds are effected by these issued permits). Basically, you call up the KDWP and file a complaint, then an adjuster would come out and check out your story, then calculate the number of deer that would have to be present to do such damage, and then calculate the number of deer that need to be removed to inhibit or minimize the problem. Kansas is really good about it, you say you have a problem, they tell you how many deer you can take, give you the tags, and you can even give them to other hunters if you aren' t of the persuation to take that many yourself.

10-4, that number isn' t in the new catalog I have and the Deer-Off was the only item that was crop safe listed in mine.:)

RE: How do you get deer to stop rampaging crops

Short Story,
Friend of mine had a small grape vineyard. The deer ate 75%+ of his grapes every year.He finally ran a cable down one side of vineyard. At night he would chain dogs to cable run along outside edge of vineyard. It worked very well and his harvest/yield went way up.Problem is he only ran it on one side of vineyard. The deer eventualy got smart and simply walked to opposite side just out of range of dogs and pigged out on available grapes! Don' t know why he didn' t make a dog run on both sides??

Anyway - he called me to hunt the problem away.I gladly obliged him,and took out every doe I could shoot.

No matter what you do,there will be a few deer that will sooner or later come in and eat everything you got. Thin them out with hunting is only sure fire solution.

timbercruiser; you' ve got the most up to date catalogue. It' s a chunk of money, so the crop must be valuable to try to protect it.

Hey Dan O, I tried to send you a private e-mail about a week ago about some sawtooth oak acorns. Did you get it?

Grandaddy used to go to the barber shop & get a couple trash bags full of hair. Then he' d piss Granny off when he cut up her nehi stockings & filled em up & tied to trees around each field. Had to do this about twice a planting season & it does help. I still like to sit out there with the rifle & put some meat with those vegetables though;)

A dead deer doesnt eat. Hunting is a viable alternative to reduce crop damage.

In the state I am from, depredation tags are issued by the wildlife Dept. for the taking of deer that damage crops. It may not solve your problem completely, but reducing the herd size will reduce the amount of crop damage.
