disposal of deer remains

I live in a small village and don' t have a convenient way to dispose of the deer carcass after butchering my deer. Digging a hole is a lot of work and impossible when the ground is frozen. How do you solve this problem?

RE: disposal of deer remains

I quarter the deer in the field and leave the spinal cord, ribs, pelvis, and skin in the field to be disposed of as nature intended, by critters and bacteria. The head and the leg bones left after deboning and processing I double bag in strong garbage bags and put them out with the regular trash.

I usually just throw mine out near the edge of one of my fields in hopes of shooting a varmint off of them.

RE: disposal of deer remains

After we are done deboneing(sp?), we just take the heads, bones etc.. out to the land that we hunt on and throw them into a gully created by water runoff. Like the last poster stated, the critters and nature will take care of what we throw out there.

RE: disposal of deer remains

Give the remains back to nature, it' ll know what to do with them. Just don' t throw the remains next to a busy area where other people will see them. All that will do is give ammo to the anti' s.

Bag it and out with the trash.

My buddy has a " mulch" pile in his back yard where he throws his old grass clippings. Since it isn' t hard packed earth it is easier to dig into and cover up.

RE: disposal of deer remains

try to throw them in a gulley or ravine. or into an are not frequented by people.

Box it up and mail it to someone ya dont like...naw just kidding. If ya live in the city and can' t bring the remains back to the land where you shot it. Just bag it and put it in the trash.
Or

You could debone it next time out in the place where you down the animal. Takes about 2 hours of your time.

RE: disposal of deer remains

Great ideas;thanks guys. I hesitate to bring back the remains where I shot the deer as the landowner would not approve. I can' t take the remains to the dump as they don' t allow it. I do have a good size compost pile and that is a great alternative. How long does it take to " decompose" ? Don' t the local critters dig it up? Next time I may quarter the animal and take the backstraps, but isn' t this a rather messy and unsanitary procedure in the woods?

RE: disposal of deer remains

Do you have trash pick up? So what if they say it is not allowed. Much better than all the chemicals that other people send to the dump. I doubt that any trash pickup would take a " carcass, so you simply double bag them and put in a cardboard box to hide what it is so the trash people won' t be offended. After processing simply cut up into sections that will fit in a bag/box.

And are you sure the landowner would object? I own land that I hunt on and would kill anyone who " littered" but wouldn' t think of throwing the bones anywhere but back on the land. We have an out of the way " boneyard" . There are probably at least 20 carcasses that we throw each year, and each year you can' t hardly tell where they were when you go back the next year. Maybe there are some gulleys that he wouldn' t mind you throwing them in.

We put the deer carcass out to attract coyotes this year ,didn' t see any coyotes but did get to see a good sized bear instead . We didn' t shoot him ,just enjoyed watching .

I' m with strut. I leave the remains in an open field and try to get a critter from it. Even if the coyotes don' t come, the crows will and that can also be pretty fun. I had a good old time this year with my new .17hmr.

With 2000 acres in our hunting club i put them wherever i want. if i am at home i take them about 200 yards behind the house and let the critters get them!

Up here the coyotes never leave anything of the gut pile by next morning. They will keep coming back for several days hoping more appears but it don' t take them no time.Thats why we hate to leave a deer out overnight for any reason, they will find it in most cases.

I have a friend who takes mine to the coyotes too but if he cant I box up the scrap tissue and put it in the trash. As far as the bones, anyone try burning them!!! They burn rather well and very hot!!!! Not much left to them after that!!!

Bone burnng in the wood box, thanks for that one! Incidentally, I have left some meat on the bone, rubbed it with olive oil ,stuck some garlic in the meat, and pushed the coals off to one side ,placing the bone inside the firebox. You have to place the bone in the right position, but the meat cooks and is absolutely delicious and fun to eat. Put some tin foil on the bottom so it doesn' t come in contact with the ashes. I call this my cave man dinner. Now after dinner,I' ll throw the bones back in and cover them with coals!

Never thought of doing it that way. Should leave a nice aroma in the house, wouldn' t you think. We like to marinade them in soy sauce then toss them directly into our fire pit by camp. After a few hours, we pull them out and scrape the jerky off then toss them back in. The garbage in the pit seems to keep the meat tender and give it a good flavor with the soy sauce!!!

Try to give a guy an answer to a question and he comes back with a smart ass remark!!! Nice--Hope this helps!!!!

Since I started processing the deer myself I usually end up putting the remains out with the garbage. The only problem is that I usually shoot my deer on a Saturday and garbage pickup is not until the following Wednesday. I normally crank up the second fridge to its highest setting and stick the remains in there until the day of pickup.

RE: disposal of deer remains

I normally have only bone and trimmings and hide. I turn the head into the DNR and the ribs I toss in the woods for the critters.

Lets all box them up and send them to PETA. Or the IRS let them try to squeez more blood out of them bones. Last year I took mine to a little draw on my place and walked up the hill to watch for old charly. When I turned around to watch they were gone already. There are a lot of yotes around there.

Hey I put the front leg bones in the woodstove and they burnt down to nothing! And yes there was a pleasant smell in the kitchen, like barbecud steak. Reminded me of summer...

I' d like to catch the idiots that are thowing deer parts in the creek down from my house. I had to wade out last year and pull them out. My cattle drink from that creek and I sure don' t want them in there. Plus the coyotes and other varmits don' t get to clean up. Just my two cents

I am amazed that no one just lets their dogs have a feast! My dogs love deer season, my wife gets a little upset when the dogs want to bring the bones in the house though!:D

RE: disposal of deer remains

my neighbors leave all their hunting remains in the woods near our home or near our property lines. they also poach alot. then if they kill beef,or hogs also we get all kinds of animal remains drug into our yard and on the porch by our dogs. we have 4 dogs 3 are tied due to various reasons--alot of which is due to this problem. while our dogs are the culprits dragging in the remains they are only doing what they natuarally will do. but while our yard used to be-an at times still is coverd in animal heads , hides, bones and some times even whole shoulders from deer, their yards stay nice neat and clean.

they take a great pride in their yard. i told my husband we should load up our trucks full of this stuff and deposit it in THEIR yards and on their porches one day when they are not home. perhaps they will get the picture. they only have at least 80 acres to dump the stuff on but they would rather leave it along our fence line for some reason. also we have an uprise of rabbies here now and this worries me about the animals that are comming in to eat this and maybe spreading the disease.--nothing like having to look at a hogs head or deer parts each time you step out side and it looks lovely for guests.
i myself allow the dogs certain trimmings of meats we should butcher and other parts disposed of for nature away from homes and certain things left in the garbage too.

I have two ponds and I put the remains in my turtle traps guts and all. But the best was to burn in trash pile behind my house. If you have a chipper you can chip the bones and feed the chips like i do to my deer dogs they hunt a lot better when the eat what they hunt don' t we?

I hunt on my own land and dispose of the carcass away from my hunting areas, just leave it lying on the ground. It is usually gone within a week, conusmed by coyotes.

When I was younger after deboning the deer we use to cut up the bones in smaller pieces and boil them for the dogs to chew on them, and that way we sved money for mom,she didn' t have to buy new shoes all the time:D:D

What we do is when where done butchering them we usually throw the remains in the woods where the coyotes will eat them. if you dont live by a woods bag them up set them out for the trash.
