You shouldn't plant or fertilize anything unless you have done a soil test. That will tell you whether or not you need any fertilizers and what micronutrients the soil needs to make the plants grow. Lime is #1 on the list of importance. If the Ph is not right for the plant you will not get proper growth as the nutrients won't be as available to the plants. Secondly the heavy metals in the soil will be uptaken by the plants, passing it on to the deer and on to whomever consumes them. (that's you)
Clovers "fix" nitrogen from the air and basically can get by with very little outside help so you need to use just enough to get it started. After that it will make its own. Any extra placed in the plot will go to production of weeds, which is exactly the opposite of what you want. You will probably need to add micronutrients like boron and phosphorus(P) andpotassium (K). Now why wouldnt you spend ten bucks on a soil test.

You can plant it without lime or fertilizer. It may grow or it may not. If you don't mind throwing seed in the ground with nothing more than a wish and a hope, go for it. If you want it to grow and you want the deer to use it, take a soil sample and do what you need to do get the PH levels correct, then plant, fertilize and then reap the benifits of a good plot.

It will defiently grow faster, greener, and thicker. I have always used some amount of fertilizer. Highly recomend using some type of fertlizer.
