***It's not been 20 years Skinnner. It was killed 10 years ago today on 12/23/03. That's still pretty darn good with all the bucks that are taken every year all over North America. |

***You got that right on both accounts!!! It is really a beautiful, almost perfectly symetrical rack and hard to believe it was only 3 1/2 or 4 1/2 years old at the most. The reason I made the "spindly" comment earlier is that I'm so used to watching shows where they are hunting up there, especially Jim Shockey, and the racks are always so dark colored and massive and their bodies look like beef cattle!

Well i do agree it looks spindly but it still has close to 5 inch mass mesurements threw out.i think the lenght of the tines make it appear smaller then what someone would suspect or expect. It was also taken in southern sask where the country has few trees so dark racks are not the norm.As far as the age iv always writen off this buck as a freak of nature.
I'm with you on the TV shows and also videos being put out. I don't watch them much or buy them any more since hunting has turned into just an industry, which is very sad after the way I was brought up back in the 50s. There are an awfull lot of private holdings where only a few have access to them and then it's top dollar no matter whether it's high or low fence. I do all my hunting DIY on public land for big game now out in Wyoming and have for some time. There is an awful lot of satisfaction knowing that I can take a good animal for just the cost of my license compared to guys that are paying $4K to $7K for a 5 day hunt for deer and elk just down the road 20 miles on a 100,000 acre ranch that doesn't really have any better animals, but they can keep people out unless they pay the outfitter that has it leased to take them. I really think we're both cut pretty much from the same mold and about the only thing we've disagreed on is the huge high fence ranches in Texas that you wouldn't hunt, but how often are two people going to agree with each other 100% of the time! I'm glad you don't have me on ignore any more, as I like the opportunity to chat with persons such as yourself that have the same basic ethics and passion that I do. Have a good holiday season Bro!!! |
Here's a closer look at the buck... I wouldn't refer to the rack as spindly

***I agree with that assessment. You immediately see the length of all those tines and the width of it, such that the mass probably does look a lot smaller than it is. I'd also say he's sort of a freak to grow a rack like that so young when normally they say a deer doesn't put that much into it's rack until it's body is pretty much as big as it will ever be. I do envy you guys up there that live where deer have that kind of potential.

Yep, thanks for the video Lunker! It does give a lot better look at that beautiful rack. I had no idea that Hanson shot another B&C buck on his property the following year after this top buck was taken. Does anybody remember anything about that one, as I'd not heard that until the NRA guy mentions it in this video?
|
I know he shot anouther booner the folowing year but know nothing about it.
|
I looked up his other Booner. 186 gross and 171 net. Less deductions on his 1993 deer. :D
The record will be shattered by a buck from Pennsylvania. A true underdog story. :D |

Skeeter7mm, how much shrinkage was there in the rack from the first green scoring to the final official scoring?
|
DONT get me wrong, I LOVE the Hanson head and agree that it DESERVES to be #1 Typ. But I feel it's a case of being #1 because a large frame 6x6 is just what "the doctor ordered" for MAXIMIZING potential score as the scoring system is written.
I have a wealthy friend in Memphis who has the most amazing trophy "cabin" out behind his house and he actually has the licensed replica mounts of the "Hole in the Horn" buck (another "not the biggest by the books" but biggest by impression when you can hold the horns in your hands!) as well as the Hanson buck and two other true GIANTS that I think are THE most impressive typicals of all time... the former #1 Jordan buck and what I truly feel is THE most "IMPRESSIVE" and largest framed buck off ALL time, the Breen buck which was #1 before the Jordan buck!!! The Breen head is just a GOLIATH that you can actually fit the Hanson head inside of! But being that the Breen buck is only a 5x5 it just doesn't add up score wise like a 6x6 (Hanson) does. The Jordan head is a brute because of it's outstanding "clean mass" that overshadows it's great length and like the Breen head, it is a 5x5 so it doesn't score as well either. The Breen head has beams OVER 31" and ALL of the G2, 3s and 4s are OVER 12" long! BUT I look at it like this, if the Hanson head AND either of the Breen or Jordan heads were standing side by side in the woods and you had to chose which one... from a simple "largest frame" and which head looks just BIGGER and casts the biggest shadow and has the larger silohette, you'd be pulling the trigger on the giant 5x5s first! The Breen Buck: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKIGmTJNFAA The Jordan Buck: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSRmXmGyzcY |
Yep, the Hanson buck may be #1, but I'll take either of those other two studs over it with the mass they both have, especially that 5x5 to score as high as he did!

Now thats a problom id love to have!i think id take the first one that turned broadside. |
Mass or no mass, anyone would luv to have this buck on their wall
|
I have seen both the Hanson and Jordan bucks both at Bass pro in Springfield. Both are awesome deer. The Jordon buck is so impressive due to its mass, unbelievable.

Gotta agree with ya Top. Dave Morris is nothing more than a deer pimp and if he could pop the world record and take credit for it under the "Tecomate System" he wouldn't hesitate to kill that deer since it would equate to millions of dollars for his company.
But, he couldn't claim it as a world record if it came off his ranch. That whole place is high fenced with artificial feed supplements and mineral supplements. That would disqualify it from the Boone and Crockett Record book since the animals don't have a natural avenue of escape. RR |
