I usually pray before the season starts for a safe season, we've had some scares up there and theres always a chance somethin will go wrong, i ask God to watch over our camp and all the guys that hunt there, then i definitely pray after i get any deer, or even after seeing a deer.

I pray for a safe hunt and then a deer if the big guy sees it fit, but safety more than anything else.
No buck is worth getting shot!

I say a prayer for the deer I was lucky enough to killand then I also tip my hat and say thanks to the woods.
I think the big guy above approves.

lol
This made me think. I do pray often when I am in the woods. And what comes to mind is last year I had a 140+ inch working towards me. I told god I would go to church for three weekends if he gave me a shot. Well he did and it was great but when I got home and told my wife she chewed into me pretty good. Saying you don't make deals with god.

I did end up going to church like I said and other than my kids baptism I never go. Doesn't mean I don't give props to the man above. I just don't understand half the stuff theytalk about there. This year I had my big buck coming to my shooting lane and again I thought about what I did last year. Well I didn't make a deal but I did pray. I was lucky enough that it all worked out.

RE: ANY ONE PRAY FOR A DEER?

I pray for a safe hunt and for me to see deer. Its worked, i'm 1-1 100%:D It really was cool to see the deer in their natural habitat. Oh another thing i pray for is a good shot as in if i shoot a deer it kills them and they don't suffer. If i gut shot a deer and it ran off and died a slow horrible death i honestly don't think i could live with myself and would have to give up hunting all together. I am a good shooter and would never think about going in the woods with a gun without zeroing it in but i know things happen.

RE: ANY ONE PRAY FOR A DEER?

I think it's pretty selfish to pray to see deer or shoot deer. Like the big guy doesn't have enough to do. I imagine thanking him after would be alright.

RE: ANY ONE PRAY FOR A DEER?

I always like to thank HIM for allowing me to wake up to another beautiful day and spend the day in some of His most beautiful country and ask Him to keep me safe and to allow me to harvest a deer if it is in His will that day. And I thank him if I do get to take an animal. I just can't describe how thankful I am to be able to get out and hunt and spend time outdoors with good health because it only through the grace of GOD.

I definitely seem to pray more during the season, it is more one on one time.....One thing I always try to do is give thanks for the animal and what it means to me. We should be greatful and asking to be watched over throughout the season of climbing trees, perching up there in winds, while sleepy, when overly excited etc. Nothing wrong with it IMO

RE: ANY ONE PRAY FOR A DEER?

I say the same prayer before every single hunt. Just thankin God for blessing me with an opportunity to do what i love most, and i do ask that he bless me with opportunites, whatever they may be. They could be abeautiful sunrise/sunset, seeing a nice buck, gettin a shot at a nice buck, seeing an animal behave a way i've never seen, seein a bear or coyote, animals i dont see regularly when deer hunting. the possibilites are endless, and He always comes through, obviously.

I don't pray for any animal to be placed in my path while hunting (that's why it's called hunting and not shopping), but I do give thanks when I have been fortunate to kill an animal. Pray for what is truly needed and not for what you just want...kind of looses the meaning to me.

Whenever i go hunting i do what the Indians use to do( or so I am told)i ask the spirits that if any mature deer wishes to cross over to the other side then would they be so kind as to let that animal walk w/i range of my hunting abilities.

RE: ANY ONE PRAY FOR A DEER?

I find myself praying alot in the woods, but I don't know that I've ever asked for a deer, a shot, etc. I love to hunt, but more than anything I love the ability to think that the solitude and peacefulness hunting gives me.

Short story:

On December 13th last year, I found out that my only child who was 6 weeks old at the time needed major surgery. We were told that this was something that really needed to be done and that we needed to make a quick decision. It wasn't something life-threatening, but something that if not corrected could be life-altering.

All of you with kids can probably relate. The birth of a child, particularly a first child, is a very dramatic time that changes your life. You sleep little, question many things, and have your life turned upside down. This is just with a typical healthy baby.

My wife had a hard time understanding, but between our meetings with numerous doctors, I spent all the time I could in the woods. It wasn't because of the hunt (I had actually filled all my tags by the time we found out that this procedure was necessary), it was because I knew that out in those trees my head would be the most clear.

I sat in my stand, thinking of all the things I had in this world that I should be thankful for. I prayed and thanked God over and over. I asked him to help guide me.

God answered my prayers. My daughter had a succesfull surgery on Jan. 3rd of last year. She was too young to ever remember it. I truly believe that without that time I spent in the woods, praying to the Lord, and trying to make the best decision possible, the outcome would have been diffferent. Not from the standpoint of the care my daughter received, but from my own piece of mind and ability to be strong for my wife and the rest of my family.

Hunting is the one activity I do that allows me to truly think. Yes, I love shooting a big deer or just putting food on the table as much as anyone else, but hunting is much more about bigger things in life than the harvesting of an animal. Maybe I feel that way because I live in the city and my time in the outdoors is limited, but after last year, my faith in God and the power of thought and prayer is stronger than at any time before in my life.

I give thanks after the animal is down.

I have great respect for nature, and never take anything without gratitude, and returning something of benefit.

RE: ANY ONE PRAY FOR A DEER?

Lets see here...where do I start? I pray for a safe hunt..... I pray for strength and a steady hand when the time comes and most of all thank God again after its all over...hit or miss! Just something about time spent in the woods that puts things into perspective and gets your head clear and right...even if its just for a few hours. Sitting in a treestand on a late October day with the leaves changing...ahhhh man.....after 30 years of hunting it STILL gives me chills. Beauty like that doesnt just happen!!!

RE: ANY ONE PRAY FOR A DEER?

First of all, I ask God to give me a safe hunt. Then I just ask for his will to be done, and acknowledge that I trust him to provide me with a deer if he should choose to. I ask for his guidance in being an ethical hunter, and also ask that I would glorify himwith my hunting in some way.

RE: ANY ONE PRAY FOR A DEER?

Yeh, I pray.
I tell him he is in control and what ever his will will be.
He know exactly whats gonna happen, since he has my life writen from birth to death.
Everything I do, or am about to do, he already knows about.

By the way, after the kill, all the glory should go to him.

that's the most important time to. to pray for and give thanks to the deer for giving its life up so you and your family can extend theirs, and to thank god for it as well.

well said. I too think and pray better in the woods. It seems so much more peacefull to me.

BTW guys don't get so wrapped up in killing something that you forget to experience the hunt. I know in the past I have slipped into this mode after going a season without a deer. I hunt because I love it. I like getting close and I like having the meat too. But mostly it is because I'm out there in a place that man has had so little of an effect on compaired to every other place I go. It feels close to God for me.

To more directly answer the question. I probably have prayed for a shot or to get a deer. I try to never bargan. However I know I have asked to see animals. I always want his will to be what happens and I make that clear when I pray.

As for if it is selfish to pray for an animal or to see them. You bet it is. But I believe God desires for us to be open and comunicate with him. I mean think about it. Do I realy need to pray for Jane who has cancer for God to know he should help her through it. He already knows that. Is it selfish to pray for that situation. Yes I think in a way it is. We don't want Jane to suffer or to be in pain. But ultimately it is his plan and his will. I think he wants us to pray and comunicate with him to increase our faith in him. So pray on. I think you find he answers them even when you don't think he's listening. Or when you don't get your desired outcome.

Just my 2 cents.

God Bless.

Proud to say I pray when I'm hunting, and when I'm doing just about everything else. When you are surrounded by all his creations how could you not pay respect to the Lord? Evolution, I don't think so.

RE: ANY ONE PRAY FOR A DEER?

Good thread, good posts. I agree with many of the others. I pray, but I never ask for a deer. I pray that I'll be able to make my best effort, not suffer, and enjoy and appreciate the hunt.

I honestly feel that if you are humble and worthy, connect with the land in a respectful way, a deer will be given up for you. Every deer is a gift. If you think it is because of your great hunting prowess or effort that you get a deer, you are mistaken. The deer has to make a mistake, and that doesn't happen by mistake. Deer are prey animals. They arehere to feed others. That is their job. Your job as a hunter is to accept the gift. I always give thanks by offering tobacco.
