I wish I had the answer to that question. Seems like after 15 min. I'm feeling like dozing off. Sometimes a quick nap on the ground works for me. I was thinking last time I did that I would look like a guy who fell out of his stand just laying there. If I'm in my climber that has arm rests etc. I usually just doze off a bit.

Drink a red bull or two before you get to the stand.

I work night shift.

I sleep in my stand all the time. Lots of times I've had something wake me to look straight at a deer as soon as I wake up.

A handheld electronic game with the sound turned off helps to keep you from getting bored and dozing off. I tend to doze off in my stand as well, but not for long periods.

I hunt to relax more than anything so if I feel drosy I just lean back and let mature take its course. If I miss a deer becasue I'm asleep I got a free pass maybe next time if I'm awake.

Every squirrel that snaps a twig or shuffles some leaves keep me awake! I swear each one seems like a deer coming to me! I'm usually up for work around 4:30 a.m. anyways, so being in the woods at 6:30 is no problem. I also don't have any stands to sit down in... I always stand, so falling asleep really isn't an option! Now if I end up getting that ground blind I've been thinking about, those quick cat naps might be nice...

Too me the nap is one of my favorite parts of stand hunting. To be so comfy and relaxed is a rare treat for me.

I get oninternet with my phone. Still tired I read a book. Still tired I get on ground against tree and take a cat nap till I amalert again. If I am still tired, I just curl up and go to sleep for a while. If it is dark when I awake, I go home and climb in bed and start over. Rest is the key. If you go out tired or hung over, you will sleep.

I don't have any problem in the morning. If I get in the stand about 30-45 minutes before light, I'm too busy paying attention to everything moving around me to doze off. After the first hour of light, I pull out my Blackberry and message and friend in Virginia who also is bored in the stand. If I'm in my Viper though, I lift my knees up and wedge them in the corners of the climbing bar, slide the seat all the way forward and take short naps waking up every 15 minutes or so and looking around. If I'm in the ladder stand I just lean forward and put my head against the shooting rail and take short naps. Strange thing, I never fall asleep in my blind. That little three legged stool up my butt making it numb just seems to keep my awake for hours.

I never have a problem staying awake in the morning. Afternoon is a different story. After about 30 minutes in the afternoon I start getting sleepy and nod and doze for about half an hour becoming alert if I hear a suspicious sound. About 30 minutes before sunset I start getting more alert and for the 30 minutes after sunset, I'm on a hair trigger cause that's when I see 90% of my deer.

I went ahead and picked up a vice to keep from falling asleep. There is nothing like a dip to keep you going although now I have gotten so overly paranoid about my scent that I use nicotine gum instead.

RE: Staying awake in stand?

Before I started using tree stands I hunted on the ground. Made my own tree seat that ratchet straps to a tree. I'd take it out the morning before opening day, set the seat and kick away all the leaves and twigs in a 6 ft diameter circle round my seat. I used to go out about 45 minutes before legal shooting time, so I'd get to my seat and curl up and lay down on the ground and catch a few z's. Someone in the woods would always shoot early which woke me up. I'd crawl into my seat ready to go.

That may work for you, but I can fall asleep with a dip in my mouth easily. I hate waking up with the dip drool all in my goatee, irritating trying to wipe it all out.

The only time I ever had any problem staying awake was Thanksgiving afternoon. After we came in from teh morning hunt and filled our bellies w/turkey it was always quite hard to stay awake until dark.

Any other time, I might catch a quick nap before it gets light of a morning, but I'm always too excited to fall asleep once it gets daylight.

If i'am tired i get in my stand 30 minutes early and take a little cat nap. The older you get the more you will fall asleep. Just make sure you have a saftey harness on.

I'm guilty of passing out in the stand as well. Its hard for me not to jerk awake when I actually realize i have fallen asleep. That's why I like a ground blind. I'm always afraid of dropping my gun or falling out of the tree or something. Glad i'm not the only one who has this problem

STAY HOME!

One time I was just hunting on the ground in public land. I had a guy come up to me saying that he almost had a heart attack. Apparently he thought I was dead or something. I must have been asleep a good 45 minutes or so.

If I'm in a stand for a while in the morning, I'll bring a book or a magazine.

Falling asleep deer hunting has never been a problem for me, but I have done it a few times. Now duck hunting on the other hand is when i sleep the most. You get up at 1 or 2 in the morning maybe get 2 hours of sleep if any and by 9:30 i'm ready for a nap. Plus cattail beds in the marsh are very comfortable and after I get done making one I'm out like a light for 30 minutes or so. And if i hear wings,my dog whining or my buddy's shooting(those jerks) I know its time to get up.
