My father and I

I am sure most of you are like me... We learned to hunt from our father. We all probably think our father's are the most accomplished hunters around. I never really loved to hunt until after college, and now i would say I spend most of my leisure time doing hunting involved activities.

Anyway, I took this nice 11-pointer this year and my dad was not around (the first time I have taken a deer without him being there). I called him on the phone (3-hours away) and told him a shot a brute (225-250 pounds) and did not know what to do... Needless to say he jumped in his car and drove three hours to help me load it into my truck and get it checked in. This is something I will never forget.

I think this photo is priceless!

Someday when you are a father, you will learn what children mean to their parents. My father rarely dropped what he was doing to come and help me, but would give me advice anytime day or night. As he laid dying in the local hospice, he told me that he had been hard on me to make sure I succeeded in life. He also told me he was very proud of me and how well I had raised my children. He went on to tell me things he remembered fondly which included getting morels, fish, pheasant, and venisonfrom me every year, my son and I going over and shoveling his drive and sidewalks, my son and I going over and mowing, the list went on and on. He told me that watching my son and I do so many things together made him realize he failed by not physically helping me when I needed it. It was one of the best times I ever had with my father. Since your dad made the 3+ hour drive to help you, do something nice for him like show up unexpectedly and take him to do something he enjoys doing. It'll give him a fond memory forever.

Thanks for the advice!

I think we were both a little disappointed that he wasn't there when I shot him. I love hunting, but most of all I love hunting with my friends and more importantly my father. It felt very lonely until he arrived.

RE: My father and I

Thanks guys...

I forgot to mention something else you might find interesting. I have noticed over the last few years my father spends less-and-less time in the woods... I chalked this up to just getting somewhat bored of hunting. In reality my father has been stricken with a severe case of arthritis, most notably in his hands/fingers. This has led him to miss a few deers over the past couple of years, which never happened previously. He says the arthritis is a kin to using a horrible trigger. He compares his arthritis to the Remington 700 trigger:)a gun which he doesn't really like... He is more a Ruger #1 guy, he says if you need more than one shot, you didn't practice enough.

Good advice AF hunter. I let my dad hunt my best spots. If I don't harvest the deer I get just as much joy out of seeing him get one.

Called the Taxidermist today to see when I might be able to pick him up and was pleasantly surprised when he said he would be done by the end of February... I am not getting my hopes up yet!

More importantly I asked him if I was still the biggest in there... and the answer was yes!:D

NG its good to see that you and your dad have a great relationship and that you appreciate and respect him ...it just shows that he and your mom raised you right .... my son and I are very close and he has been hunting with me since he was 14 and he is now 36 ....we have not hunted much together since I moved from Alabama to Kentucky but we talk everyday ... I sure miss him being with me (having him drag my deer) :)in the woods .....

Nice deer! As a new father, I can relate to what your Dad did. I hope I am there when my son kills his first deer.

RE: My father and I

It felt very lonely until he arrived.
I can relate. Not trying to hyjack your thread but I had a similar situation a couple weeks ago. I shot my biggest buck ever. One I may never top (I hope so but who knows) Anyway I was actually hunting on my dads land. I work with him too but had skipped out that morning. I actually heard him start his truck and drive off to work about 15 minutes before I shot my buck. The first thing I did was call him. In fact I was talking to him as the deer took his last breaths. (Had to walk up and finish him off) Anyway he said he had to head into work and asked if I was ok without his help. I was devistated but didn't let him know and said I'd be ok. Well about five minutes later I get a call he's headed back and there was no way he'd miss this. (Work is only 25 minutes or so away) So I can relate to feeling lonely. I sat in admaration of this huge whitetail buck by myself. I was excited and was so ready for dad to arive. After dragging my buck out of the feild (70-80 yards) I was wooped. I was ready for the help. When he showed up I was sitting on his front porch waiting for him. The first thing he said was that my grandfather (84) was on his way as well. So we walked back to my deer and took some pictures before Grandpa arived. Here I went from disapointment to my two best freinds in the world being there on this day with me. What a memory for me. Other than with my wife and kids I love being around my dad and granfather as much or more than anyone in the world.

Congrats on a great buck and a great memory for you and you dad.

Here is a pic of my dad and me that day
