Scouting Cameras

I'm going to get a scouting camera fairly soon for my deer camp. (I'll own it, but I'll be using it up at the camp.) Yeah, I've seen the ad for the various ones. I'm tending towards getting a CamTrakker, but a DeerCam sounds nice. As for making one, I'm "mechanically declined," so I'd rather not.

Who here has experience with scouting cameras? And which ones?

RE: Scouting Cameras

Muddy,

Good luck with your new scouting tool, they are great. I have owned a few, but must say that I would suggest to stay away from the Moultrie cams. Not that some folks have not had good luck with their's, but I can tell you a horror story.

The cams I currently use are homebrew made by a guy on another forum I frequent. His cams are wonderful and do a great job. If you would like his info let me know I will pass it on.

Here is a link to the Moultrie horror story.

His cams are only $150.

Here is a quick pic. The scanner I used did not do this justice.

RE: Scouting Cameras

Thanks, Jim. I had noticed the Moultrie game cams in the Cabela's 2003 Shooting Catalog, and I was wondering about them. I figured that "you get what you pay for," so that's why I was considering the CamTrakker or the DeerCam.

I've seen a lot of testimonials to CamTrakker's cameras here on the board. No better advertising than word of mouth, IMO.

Again, thanks.

Mudd,

That last line of your post says it all.

Good luck. Remember that a cam does not have to be expensive, only well made.

Could you give the information to the person who makes the cameras.

RE: Scouting Cameras

I wish I would have saved my money and got a Cam-traker, IMO they are the best.

Cabelas,

Welcome to the board brother. Click on the link in my above post. It has info on the fella I bought one from. For buying one off the shelf, I love cammtracker and non-typical. Theyu both get very good reviews.

BTW, my cam burned up a couple of days ago on an unscheduled prescribed burn!!!:(

I got a Moultrie for Christmas, and have gotten deer pictures with it. I'll post one later. For the money it has been a good camera, so far.

I own the Deer-Cam made by non-typical and it has been great. I have had it for a little over a year now and couldn't ask for a better camera. I saw them on sale in a GON magazine (Georgia Outdoor News=GON) for $229.95. To me they are worth every penny!
