Scouting Cameras
I'm going to get a scouting camera fairly soon for my deer camp. (I'll own it, but I'll be using it up at the camp.) Yeah, I've seen the ad for the various ones. I'm tending towards getting a CamTrakker, but a DeerCam sounds nice. As for making one, I'm "mechanically declined," so I'd rather not.
Who here has experience with scouting cameras? And which ones? |
RE: Scouting Cameras
Muddy,
Good luck with your new scouting tool, they are great. I have owned a few, but must say that I would suggest to stay away from the Moultrie cams. Not that some folks have not had good luck with their's, but I can tell you a horror story. The cams I currently use are homebrew made by a guy on another forum I frequent. His cams are wonderful and do a great job. If you would like his info let me know I will pass it on. Here is a link to the Moultrie horror story. http://www.woodystaxidermy.com/forum...threadid=11769 His cams are only $150. Here is a quick pic. The scanner I used did not do this justice. RE: Scouting Cameras
Thanks, Jim. I had noticed the Moultrie game cams in the Cabela's 2003 Shooting Catalog, and I was wondering about them. I figured that "you get what you pay for," so that's why I was considering the CamTrakker or the DeerCam.
I've seen a lot of testimonials to CamTrakker's cameras here on the board. No better advertising than word of mouth, IMO. Again, thanks. |
RE: Scouting Cameras
Mudd,
That last line of your post says it all. Good luck. Remember that a cam does not have to be expensive, only well made. Jim Visit me on the Web... http://www.huntinginga.com |
RE: Scouting Cameras
Could you give the information to the person who makes the cameras.

RE: Scouting Cameras
I wish I would have saved my money and got a Cam-traker, IMO they are the best.

Cabelas,
Welcome to the board brother. Click on the link in my above post. It has info on the fella I bought one from. For buying one off the shelf, I love cammtracker and non-typical. Theyu both get very good reviews. BTW, my cam burned up a couple of days ago on an unscheduled prescribed burn!!!:( Jim Visit me on the Web... http://www.huntinginga.com Edited by - huntinginga on 02/01/2003 09:22:58 |

RE: Scouting Cameras
I got a Moultrie for Christmas, and have gotten deer pictures with it. I'll post one later. For the money it has been a good camera, so far.

RE: Scouting Cameras
I own the Deer-Cam made by non-typical and it has been great. I have had it for a little over a year now and couldn't ask for a better camera. I saw them on sale in a GON magazine (Georgia Outdoor News=GON) for $229.95. To me they are worth every penny!

RE: Scouting Cameras
Muddy,
You dont need to go to woodies website. I can give you first hand experence with the (@)(*#$(%) Moultrie Game Cam II. They are a peace of junk. I got one in Sept and set it out on a trail going to my food plot. This trail was about 3 to 3 1/2 yards from my camera. Fresh deer tracks in the field and on the trail. I check back in a week. Film taken GREAT!! Put another roll in. (First mistake. Did not develop it right then.) I went back again in another week and again the film was taken. Well I then take them to get developed. Visions of world class bucks on each picture dancing in my head as I picked up the film. BUT whats this a photo of the empty field, and another, and another.......48 pictures of that same empty field. I call the company (I had reloaded the camera) and they told me to check the 3rd role and if it did the same to send it to them. To make this story short. I have sent the camera back 5 times so far. They replace the board and camera and it still does the same thing. They sent a rechargable batt to me for my trouble but the thing was dead (would not charge). It has been at the company for about a week now and I am going to call the 800 number (which they did not list) and check on it today. This is my story. Woodies has several and other sites have more. Bottom line it is junk may work for a while but it will go out. Mine has never worked. Rick Lifes not about knowing the answers, its about asking the questions. |
RE: Scouting Cameras
Who
I have only developed one roll of film from my Moultrie, but the pics are really good and clear. I was wondering, what speed film did you use? I used 800 speed, and one deer I got a pic appeared to be trotting, so the film speed was okay. So far, so good with the Moultrie. I've talked to some people who have one and seemed pleased by it. Of course there are bad ones, or maybe mine is a rare good one so far. Who knows, it could fail next week. But if it fails within a year, I'll be sure to get my money back from Moultrie. RE: Scouting Cameras
Jeff,
I am glad you are having good luck with yours. I had 2 of the original Moultries that worked flawless for about 8 months and then they both died...at the same time might I add. I then went through a serious headache with trying to get 2 of the new ones working. After sending them both back 2 times, I finally said they could keep them and the offered to send me an ATV spreader instead. I said fine, then Moultrie not only sent me the spreader, they sent me 2 more cameras. So I go hang them and one would not accept film, the other took 24 pics within 10 minutes of me hanging it. So they are now sitting at the house collecting dust beside my spreader. I now know of 3 people including you that have had good luck with the camera and I am more than happy for you. Heck I had great luck with my original Moultries and gave rave reviews. I hope yours continue to give you good service. Jim Visit me on the Web... http://www.huntinginga.com |
RE: Scouting Cameras
Thanks huntinginga
I hope they continue to work too. I do have to say, your pics really look good! Also, I'm having trouble accessing my picture hosting. If anyone wants to put a Game Cam pic up for me here, I'll email the pic to you. Thanks. "Playing under the table and dreaming" |

RE: Scouting Cameras
Jeff,
Im glad that its working for you. I use the 800 also. I still say a deer would need to crawl in front of mine and die before it would get a picture of it. Good Luck, Rick Lifes not about knowing the answers, its about asking the questions. |
