little sisters FIRST buck

Saturday was the opening day of firearm season in Indiana. I took my little sister, Mikayla, hoping she would get a shot at her first at a buck. I had seen tons of little basket racks that i thought would just be perfect for her. About an hour after sunrise I decided to do a couple of doe bleats. As soon as i finished i turned back and looked in the field to my left and saw a great big old doe staring right at us. I thought for sure we were going to be busted. the doe started walikng down the edge of the field (60 yards) but was very nervous and stomping her feet. I had the video camera on her, and was watching her through it. mikayla and I had decided earlier that if a big doe came in, she wanted to shoot it. Right as mikayla went to raise her gun i told her "Dont shoot, there's a monster behind her don't shoot!" about twenty yards behind the doe, all you could see was a rack sticking up above the weeds. It took mikayla a second to find the buck, but she did. The buck was casually walking behind the doe. i told mikayla to shoot him if she wanted to. Once he was in the clear for both of us, i stopped him with a loud blat. He stopped, and looked at us. Mikayla shot was perfect, and he only went about thirty yards. I was able to capture the whole thing on film. Neither one of us knew exactly what she had shot until we found it, and even then she was still naive about it. The deer grossed 164 5/8. He was shot out of the same stand i shot my best buck out of a week earlier, almost to the hour. (only 127 3/8) It was one heck of a first buck!!

Congrats to your sister! They all look big in the woods, but they get bigger when you get them out of the woods. My first buck was 153" and I really had not clue how big he was until we brought him to the check station. Once again, congrats!

Awesome, and that last picture is fantastic, you should have one framed for her.

So why isn't she a member of this site? We need more women hunters here and in the woods.

Was this the first time she has hunted? Or the first deer she has killed?

Tell her to get her butt on her and tell us the story! I wouldn't mind seeing some of the video either if you can host it somewhere. Just her shooting it and her reaction afterward. I always get a kick out of seeing someone kill their first animal.

I just posted on a thread in the bowhunting forum about having mounts done. I am not real into having a deer mount done simply because of the cost. However if this was my daughter I would probably be selling something to have it done.

Wait 'til she dates a guy that hunts (if she is not already) and he sees that bruiser on the wall and she says she shot it;).

And kudos to you for being a part of it, your parents must be doing something right if you kids are that close.

Paul
