What % of the time...
... do you see deer in the stand? I've been in the woods about 25 times this year, and I have only seen 3 deer. 2 were together! So, I've seen deer about 1 out of every 12 times. I've hunted out of a total of 7 stands and have rotated so I have been in each of them for a morning hunt and afternoon. I'm just curious if this is a common occurence or do the deerjust know I'm a good SHOT! ;)Everyone is always telling me about how they saw 10 does, 3 buck and a bunch of spikes, etcand I never ever see more than 3-4 in a hunt. Then again I've never had a friend talk about howmuch money they LOST in Las Vegas. Or is it like when you go fishing, catch 3 1-lb fish, but by the time you get home it ends up being a 1-lb'er, a 3-lb'er and a 5-lb'er?
Just curious. |
RE: What % of the time...
I think its probably like the fish stories. Although, there are people who have access to those areas that are better than anything. Seein all those deer in one sitting.

RE: What % of the time...
I see deer about 99% of the time in my areas, but that's not saying I see deer I would take 99% of the time.
|
RE: What % of the time...
Geez, can I come hunt with you sometime?[8D] That's incredible! Of the 3 deer I saw, 1 was a forked horn and the other was a LITTLE fawn. So, only one shootable deer this whole year.

RE: What % of the time...

I don't always see deer now, I'd say every other time out I'll get skunked. That being said, I like it that way. I have no desire to set and watch a field full of deer and "pick" the one that I want. |
RE: What % of the time...
I've had years back in the late 80's and early 90's where you'd see 25 to 30 deer in a single day....gun or bow season.
The last 5 years or so, I've been hard pressed to get my eyes on any more than 6 or 7 in any one given day, give or take. And that's on a good day. I'm not sure if it's the area's deer populus, the fact that coyote and wolf numbers are rising at crazy levels, that there's less hunting pressure, or what. That's the reason why so many WI residents have a tough time swallowing the DNR's statements of more deer in these same areas than there has ever been before. |
RE: What % of the time...
Very rarely do I ever not see a single deer.... Usually I see between 1 and 4....
Opening day last year, I I counted 24 deer shooting the 24th at 3:oo pm on that opening day.... It varies, but I usually always see deer, its a good spot. |
RE: What % of the time...
I see deer every time I go out. The deer are everywhere here in the south. I usually see about 30-50/day. The problem is seeing shooters. I saw around 120 deer this past weekend and only 2 were shooters.

RE: What % of the time...
Sounds like a location issue to me. Last year I hunted a friends land for free and I only saw 3 deer. This year I joined a lease and I lost count of all the deer I saw durning black powder season alone. I could never understand how people passed up a deer for "something better" when I was lucky to even see one. Now I get it.
In addition I did a lot more pre-season scouting which improved my choice of blind locations. |
RE: What % of the time...
Very rarely skunked. BUT I hunt some very good property and we scout it a ton of the off season. By no means do I mean that I get shooting opourtunities each time out. Some times it's just a deer or two way off.
I guess it also matters where you are hunting. If you see nothing and your land has deer from evidence of sign, trailsand pictures thenyou might be doing something wrong. How about looking at the wind? getting some game cams out on your trails? put out some minerals or corn (if legal) |
RE: What % of the time...
I saw 2 does this year in 15 trips out. Im a freshman in college so it is hard to find time to get out and hunt.

Except thepictures of turkey! It's so thickwhere we hunt an 80 yard shot is a long shot so you NEVER see oneway off. I hunt mainly out of tree climbers so I can get high enough with the use of cover scent that I rarely get winded by one. |
RE: What % of the time...
I hunt mostly public land in WI, and I see deer on less than 50% of my hunts. There's plenty of deer there, but the cover is heavy, and the hunting pressure is intense. They hide. That's why I've started still-hunting more in the last few years. Standing sucks. If I'm going to get skunked, I'm going to have a more relaxed and comfortable time doing it. With still hunting, if you encroach onhiding deer, and if you're skilled and lucky enough, they will move and you will see them. Usually the deer win the game, but occasionally they make a mistake. Luck is a big factor too, deer can come in on you from any direction at any time. I firmly believe that if most hunters put as much time and energy into still hunting as they do with standing, their success rate would hold or improve.

Gundeck, I kill does for meat and then I hunt horns. My 2 sons (6 and 4 years of age) and me have killed 6 does and 3 bucks---so the deer meat is no problem.

RE: What % of the time...
Drogerm,
My dad went to Arkansas to deer hunt about 10 years straight and said he would see 60-70 deer in a week. He was hunting near the Arkansas/Missouri border though. As for me, I would say I see deer when I am in the stand about 9 times out of 10.....at least one deer. Tonight I was skunked besides scaring a deer about 20 yards away while repairing my stand. Yesterday afternoon I saw 1 buck, and yesterday morning I saw 4 bucks, 3 were 1.5 year olds, and the other was a 10-pointer near 140-class. I also saw 5 does and what might have been a button buck. So in the last 48 hours I have seen 11 deer while sitting and 12 total while out hunting. However, that is just 2 out of my last 3 hunts. |

RE: What % of the time...
That is an interesting thought that would play a big factor in how many deer you see. From where I sit I can see about 250 - 300 yards in 3 directions. I sit on a hill looking down into the brush and that gives me a big advantage even over a 20' tall stand. (The hill is about 60' tall). If I wasdown lower and could only see 50 - 100 yards I would have seen fewer deer.
I did see 3 rattlesnakes leaving my stand in the dark in the evenings but no jack rabbits. I haven't ever seena jack rabbit on my property actually, but I have seen a few cotton tails. Where my property is I actually have some real trees and 2 creek bottoms and some hills, not the flat as a pancake mesquite brush flats like you get going out farther west. I'm really happy with my place out there. |
RE: What % of the time...
It depends on what I'm looking for. There are places that I know I will see deer anytime I go there. But they are does and small bucks. There are other places where I might not see deer, but based on scrapes and rubs, I know that larger bucks may be. Once the rut starts, I'll go to those places where I know the does hang out, in hopes of seeing a shooter buck.
I usually see a few deer when I'm on the stand, but the last two days were unseasonably warm, so not much was moving. A waste of a couple of vacation days, unfortunately. |
RE: What % of the time...
Wouldn't it be nice if you could schedule your vacation around the weather the same way we do moon phases?
