Beginners Luck
Just curious how many on these forums killed a deer on there very first hunt. It took me 5 years before getting my first doe. This reminds me of a story. My dad took a coworker of his hunting with us. The guy never hunted before in his life, borrowed a gun, and we took him down on the river. My dad dropped him off and told him to walk in about 100 yards and just set down and wait....About 30 minutes later he shot a 8 point. That next monday at work he was telling his story and said chances are he would never hunt again. It was to easy and no challenge involved.
So curious if there is any other stories where the first deer ruined people from hunting, or maybe makes us jeolous that we have hunted so hard and long without killing deer. |
RE: Beginners Luck
I was 14 when I started deer hunting. Below is a picture of my first deer. It was taken in Ohio with a shotgun at 10 yards:

oops. forgot the pic. let me try this again

RE: Beginners Luck
I will lhave to trim the pic, the file is too large. Anyway, harvesting a deer on my 1st hunt just made me hungrier for big bucks. It did not spoil my attitude towards the sport. 15 years later, I still get buck fever!!

RE: Beginners Luck
I was 17 when I first deer hunted, went out on my grandparents farm a small woods about 6-8 acres, no one ever deer hunted it. Got up in my stand and was there only about 30 minutes when a big 9 point came walking across the field, he was just about ready to step into the woods about 25 yrds out when he got a sniff of me as he spun around I shot hit him high on the back, 12 gauge with no scope. Dropped right there. Live weight 225 lbs field dressed at 199 lbs. He's hanging on the wall in my office right now.......have shot several since then but only had a chance at one that big since. It made me want to hunt more, not the opposite.

RE: Beginners Luck
I got my first deer the first year that I hunted when I was 16. My biggest so far is a 132" mule deer that I got three years ago. I have been watching a monster this year and hope to get him on Saturday when season opens. Buck fever is always there.

RE: Beginners Luck
1st hunt was 3 seasons ago. My budies all got theirs on the first day and I stayed 2 more days by myself. I got a doe on my my last day. If she hadn't of run down the mountain to my truck, I probably never would of made it out of there with her. It cured me of hunting alone, but not of hunting.

RE: Beginners Luck
Cont me in. 1st year of hunting. 1st real day in the woods. Borrowed gun. Borrowed clothes. 15 minutes in the woods and a nice 6pt trots up and stopped 15 feet from me. I've been buying all sorts of guns and bows and clothes since then and have never had another experience like that since. I still consider it my best mount of all those on the wall. It is THE experience that has turned me into the hunter/outdoorsman that I have become. And is was over 25 years ago........seems like yesterday.

RE: Beginners Luck
This is my 3rd year at it. Got a small buck on my second day the first year. last year I got a nice doe opening morning and decent buck the next morning.
Scouting is looking pretty good for this year so we will see if the streak keeps going! |
RE: Beginners Luck
I have been hunting for over 30 years. Got my first doe on my second day the first year. Got my first buck the next year on the first day. I am still fascinated by every deer I see. (Not to mention, turkeys, fox, coyotes, etc.) Squirrels I could live without. :D

RE: Beginners Luck
It was probably my 6th or 7th hunt before I ever bagged a deer. I saw deer the very first time I ever went, but didn't have a shot. My first deer was a nice size doe.
In my county (Hall) in the great state of Georgia every single day is an either sexday this year during gun season so I'm hoping to bag about 5 does to load up my freezer. Right now I've only shot one and haven't seen a single buck, but I'm hoping that will change Saturday morning. :D |
RE: Beginners Luck
YOu guys are luck. I gat a shot at a buck my second year of hunting but missed. i didn't kill a deer till my sixth year of hunting and I didn't get a buck till ny eighth.

RE: Beginners Luck
ahh..i guess im gonna have to sling my story in here.. ever sinch i was in the 3rd grade i always wanted to go deer huntin but nobody else in my family hunted. me friends dad is a really good deer hunter and kills a 130class+ deer just about every year. well i was about 14 and he asked if i was gonna hunt that season and of couse i said "prob not but i want to" well i bought a peason bow, arrows, sights, everything i needed for $100. it was a deal. i spent some time at his house shootin it and he helped me get my shootin right. then opening day of bow season i was sitting in the edge of a field where i had been seeing these 2 8pts and a 10pts. i was facing the woods thinking they would come out of there.. haha i was wrong. they came across the field and came up behind me and stoped and just started eating 15yds from my tree. so i start shaking like crazy and trrn around, arrow hits a limb, falls off the rest. and all 3 bucks run off across the field.
opening day of gun i borrowed my grandpas 308. he said it was sighted in and would hit a penny at 100yds so i said "ok, if you say so".. that week the 10pt i iseen during bow comes walking between the 2 fields. i shoot one time..the deer just keeps walkin and never runs. i shoot 4 times all together and the deer never falls. i stayed out of school the next day looking for the deer all day in the rain. found out the fun was shootin 3ft to the left and 3ft high. another time i was useing a shotgun and one of the 8pts walked by and shoot twice..the deer never droped. guess i was shakeing so much i forgot to aim. that by far was the season that got me into hunting like i am today. it took me 3 years of hard hunting to get my first buck. it wa a small 12in 6pt chasing a doe. i was so excited that i had finally got one. and now today after all i have had to learn on my own i see bucks all the time and have already taken 2 8pts this year. i think the first year it really got me hooked. theres no way i would have went 3 years w/o seeing nice bucks and still be hunting. |
RE: Beginners Luck
the first time i went hunting i didnt see anything at all, but it atleast take 1 year to shoot at a deer and maybe another 1 more year to actually bring one down... well thats how mines played out

RE: Beginners Luck

RE: Beginners Luck
I was lucky enough to be sucesfull durring my first ever deer hunt. I didn't even own a gun so I borrowed my friends twelve gauge single shot. I didn't really know much about hunting other than what I had heard from friends at work. Opening morning of modern gun I walked into this thick wooded area behind where I used to work. It was so thick I could hardly walk through it. I got about 50 yards in and set down. Well about an hour later I hear something and then see orange. It was a kid carrying a shotgun so I dunked down and waited till he was close enough to see me when I spoke to him. It was private property so I asked him how he got in and he told me his father and him came in on boat. I decided that it was time for me to leave since there were other people walking around in there and it wasn't a very large patch of woods. On the way home I decided it was too early to go home so I went in on the other end of that property (probably 2 miles away). I walked into this field and didn't see anything so I walked about twenty yards into the tree line and walked parallel with the field. I started seeing a bunch of fresh rubs and then out of the corner of my eye something caught my attention. So I ran out into the field and there standing about 40 yards away was a small 6 point that I flushed out. I through the gun up and shot some 000 buck at him. I could tell it hit him and he took off running across the field with me after him. The field kind of had a high spot in the center and I wanted to see where he went on the other side. Well that was my first mistake. When I got over the crest he had already laid down but when he seen me he bolted. I spent the next three hours trying to find blood and just out of luck I finally found a small speck and then another and another. I had almost given up before that. I finally tracked him down about 200 yards away on a trail. He was laying down having problems breathing and I didn't really know what to do. I didn't really want to shoot him again and I didn't have the heart to cut his throat so I just left him and headed back to get my truck. When I got back he was dead. Then the fun part began. I didn't even know how to gut him. After calling a few people and getting a general idea I worked my way through it. When I got him home I didn't have a clue on how to process him either so like a dumbass I cut this deer up with a box knife. It was a pain in the ass but a definite learning experience. I started having them processed after that and then that got too expensive so now I just quarter them up and cut the backstraps off and be done with it. It's a whole lot cheaper.

RE: Beginners Luck
If it wasn't for bad luck, I'd have no luck whatsoever! My first 2 years of hunting I only sawone spike. I did see it 3 times! My nephew did kill 2 deer opening morning his first year, though. Then went and killed one that evening, too! He's been ruined ever since.

RE: Beginners Luck
I killed a doe and a buck my first season. It was at the end of the season but the doe I killed at 40 yards running with a shotgun and the 9 pointer I killed at 50 yards standing still. It was 19 inches wide and 14 tall.

RE: Beginners Luck

RE: Beginners Luck
I got my first deer (a doe), the last afternoon of the last day of season. A friend and I were walking back to the car in the middle of the afternoon because schedules wouldn't allow us to remain out at sunset. Spooked her out of some field edging and were able to take her home.
I've gotten a deer each year since, including this year, my fourth year hunting. Of course, this year was with a bow so I'm particularly happy with this one. And gun season opens Saturday. |
RE: Beginners Luck
Yeah, I'm in that club as well. First deer hunt I get cold and head to the car; get some dry roasted peanuts, and sat down where I could see the car so when my buddies show up I can leave.
Not there 20 minutes, when a huge buck comes running across a field right to me.......11 paces from me to the deer when I let him have it! He was an 11 pointer scoring 132, field dressed 215 lbs. BIGINNER'S LUCK you betcha |
RE: Beginners Luck
congrats,
nice rack |
RE: Beginners Luck
Took me 6 years before I got my first deer a 210lb 6 pointer. Ill have to see if I can dig up the pics and scan them. Since then I have shot deer every year.

RE: Beginners Luck
first year ever hunting was last year. i told my dad that i wanted to go hunting a week before season opened. he went out rushed to get a gun and clothes and we went hunting. didnt see anything opening day and didnt see anything until thanksgiving saturday we were hunting in amherst sitting on the cold ground against a tree in a rye grass field and at 6:30 a nice 8 pointer popped out of the woods. took probly five steps out of the woods, stopped, and bam. ran about 40 yards. great first deer and this year have gotten a 3 pointer. definitaly did not discourage me because i had to wait so long till i even saw something.
