I have used a 300 Wby Mag for deer too, but inside of 50yards, the deer don't know that they got hit. They usually run at least 40 yards. With the 30-06 it never fails to drop them in their tracks.
300 Win Mag with a 150 grain bullet. 180 grain for elk--Does wonders on both animals

Just bought a Remington 700 SPS in 300 wsm. Will be at the range Sat, and hopefully hunting with it in two weeks. 1st bolt action non-milsurp rifle, 1st time hunting something other then turkey with shotguns!
