RE: Dude ! what kind of deer is this? ( pic )
this deer was shot by a friend yesterday. It was killed north of san antonio Tx. One friend says its just a black whitetail, other friend says it aint no whitetail, what do you all think it is, could it be a cross breed of some sort
|
RE: Dude ! what kind of deer is this? ( pic )
Looks like it's mixed with a goat

Is there a tail on that thing?
|
RE: Dude ! what kind of deer is this? ( pic )
looks to me like a melanistic button buck.
|
RE: Dude ! what kind of deer is this? ( pic )
i would say that it is probably a crossbred with an exotic
|
RE: Dude ! what kind of deer is this? ( pic )
Just a nubby! Cross breeding is too rare. There are at least 27 variants of Whitetail though, some are just darker.

RE: Dude ! what kind of deer is this? ( pic )
Demon deer:D

RE: Dude ! what kind of deer is this? ( pic )
Who has the longer face...the deer or the friend?:D
Sure is a good looking deer though. Bow ain't bad either, looks fun. Edit: Googled this up from JoeyG's info, http://www.northamericanwhitetail.co...201melanistic/ |
RE: Dude ! what kind of deer is this? ( pic )
Looks alot like a Sika deer. I killed a stag on Friday. But never saw a doe so dark. One way to tell if its a sika is if it has K9's like a elk. Whitetail do not. There are different breeds of sikas. Here's a sika.
|
RE: Dude ! what kind of deer is this? ( pic )
The tail(what is visable) looks like a whitetails! Maybe just mutated color gene.If it is just mutated color it's a good one to take out of gene pool!
|
RE: Dude ! what kind of deer is this? ( pic )
Ears too big to be a sika,Sika usally smell real musky too! Noticed something else in the picture ZREX I hope it is a Sika or some exotic,or your partner is handicapped, the crossbow could be a problem hunting deer right now!I could be wrong...I am most the time!:D

RE: Dude ! what kind of deer is this? ( pic )
That is a dead deer. I've seen them before. Usually identified by the fact that they are "allowing: a human to touch them.
Hope this helps. [X(] |

RE: Dude ! what kind of deer is this? ( pic )
Ihave heard of melanistic deer, but no, I have never seen one and likely never will. I did some research and found that a black deer is much rarer than an albino or piebald. There seems to be a pocket of melanistic deer in central Texas, but other than that they are just freaks of nature, with one popping up here and there once in a while.
|
RE: Dude ! what kind of deer is this? ( pic )
Its melanistic its a one in a million chance and a hundred times less likely than an albino but there are a few in Texas from what I have read. Albinos are caused by a lack of pigment in their body melanistic are coused by the opposite an over abundance of it.
This is a picture from an article I read. ![]() |
RE: Dude ! what kind of deer is this? ( pic )
It is a fallow button buck. Trust me, worked on an exotic ranch north west of San Antonio fora few months. They come in colors ranging from black to white.

RE: Dude ! what kind of deer is this? ( pic )
Does look like a goat....some exotic cross breed, or something. Weird.
I agree, that guy doesn't look too happy, either. Reminds me of that joke: Horse walks into a bar. Bartender says, "Why the long face?" |
RE: Dude ! what kind of deer is this? ( pic )
It is an ultra-rare melanistic whitetail button buck.
My understanding is whitetails can't cross-breed with Sika or Fallow deer. (Muleys yes, others no) |
RE: Dude ! what kind of deer is this? ( pic )
He shot a freakin goat!!:D

|
RE: Dude ! what kind of deer is this? ( pic )
JoeyG is right ... that is a melanistic deer , they are even more rare than a albino deer.
It was said it had to do with the pegment of there skin that produce's a darker color of hair. |
RE: Dude ! what kind of deer is this? ( pic )
The deer also has an overbite. Probably a birth defect of some kind. I raise sheep and once in a while one will be born black with an overbite like that but they have always been dead.
