2 Hours to Score IL Buck
Hmmmmmm. Didn't even see one decent buck all last year. This year I had to work the 1st two days of the season. Saw a cool front moving in so got out this morning, October 3rd. Slow and quiet for 1 1/2 hour and my sister calls me on the cell phone, so I talk to her from my tree for 1/2 hour. Hang up, and a bruiser runs right under my tree and out to 10 yards. Full draw......grunt......grunt.......grunt.......he ignores me and blows through nervously. Nice buck maybe 140 class, but could not stop him. 1 minute later two more come through behind him. A dink and this guy, who I stopped with a grunt and drilled. Arrow only penetrated 12". Blood for 80 yards, then nothing. Nothing for 2 hours of looking, then I start grid search and find him 150 yards from last drop. Had to look through about 6 football fields of 3' tall grass. I think I got very lucky. Anyway the arrow got wedged into the off shoulder and thus the blood did not pour out.
My buddy Jim came over to help me drag him out 350 yards, then wheel out another 1/2 mile. Wow was it hot. I never shot a decent buck this early, nor in this hot a temperature. It was 76 and sunny when I got to the butcher shop. Don't think he'll make P&Y due to missing G-4, but he has nice main beams.
3rd good mature buck off public land in 5 years.
