I like 30-06 for big gamebased on the versitility. I can hunt anything from moose to deer, just by changing the ammo I'm using. There are some lower end combos out there, ie Sav. 111FCXP3& Rem 710,both come with 3x9 scopes. But I recommend going forsomething a little moreexpensive to ensure your staring on the right foot. Rem 700 is always a good choice.
As for shotguns, I have the Rem 870 Express Super Mag. Awesome gun and very versitile. It shoots anything from light duty 2 3/4" to heavy duty 3 1/2". You can also get a fully rifled barrel to shoot slugs.

a 30 ot 6 has barely any kick if you are bigger person... but if you are smaller use a 35 special it barely has no kick

Depends a few things. . .your size and shooting experiencefor a start. I started both my boys with a Remington model 7, that's a nice smaller size youth model. Comes in a few calibers but I started them with a .260, for those that don't know this round, .243 brass necked up to .260, shoots a very nice 120gr round. This is a super round for whitetail, pigs, yotes.

Top it off with a VX-II 3x9 and get a trigger job done on it you will have a very nice set up that you will use evenafter you have added others to your gun safe.:D;)

I would defenitely go with the Remington 870 Express for the shotgun and I wouldnt go any bigger than a 243 if you are new to shooting. 243 is all you need to kill a deer and isnt going to kill your shoulder either.

Your probably going crazy with all the different calibers suggested. Pick something you can shoot comfortably. If your friends and family have firearms test them out first to see how they feel to you. Make sure you buy something that fits you and that the recoil wont bother you too much.There are plenty of calibers out there so you shouldnt have a problem finding one. All the suggestions on here will knock a deer over.

If youre looking for a good shotgun go with a 20 gauge, more accurate than a 12, Remington makes some goodns, and for a rifle, you can beat the .35 Remington. Excellent all purpose gun.

Hi guys and gals...my first post after lurking for a while.

My 13 yr old is tall (5-9) but thin. Only owning two guns (12 ga. 870 and a Rem. 742 3006) I thought I'd have to go out and buy a smaller caliber gun for his 1st time deer hunting.

Before I did that I went out and bought some of Remington's new "Managed Recoil" bullets and had him try them in the 3006. He can only load 1 at a time (these bullets wont eject in a semi auto) but that's OK.

These bullets do kick much less than a 150 or 180 grain Rem Core Lockt PSP, and he's very comfortable shooting the 3006 with these bullets. So he can use the 3006 and I'll shoot the 870 which has been a very very good gun for me. Our max distance shots are 100 yards, so we're in good shape. When he gets a little meat on him, he can shoot the 3006 with std bullets and Dad can go out and get me a new gun!!! :D

Deer gun?? 243 or 7-08.. 7-08 has more options for larger game like Mulies and Elk if that is in your future.

I also shoot a Savage .270 and it does not have too much kick to it. But I have shot quite a bit, so it makes a difference. If you are really new to shooting, I would suggest a .243 or a 6mm (.244).

As for a shotgun, for a first gun, you can't beat a Remington 870. Actually, it is a gun that is great forever, not just a first gun.:)
If you are looking for a semi-auto, a Stoeger 2000 is a good low-priced auto shotgun.
