I am writing an arugment on the cost of deer tags and it's affect on the sport. Does anyone know where I can find any good articles or information on deer tags or just the cost of hunting in general? Thanks much!

RE: The Cost of Deer Tags

I have no idea, but i know that where I hunt at, deer tags are like $30 for a combo deer license. 1 deer with at least 1 ,1 inch point, and the next deer has to have 4 or more points on one side...
Good Luck

For licensing prices, you could go to each state's parks and wildlife service web site.

Here's the page for Texas:

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/business/licenses/public/recreational/index.phtml

A resident license is $23.00. Most guys also get turkey stamps and migratory bird stamps, etc. I believe the $23.00 license allows you to take up to 5 whitetail deer and 2 mule deer, depending onwhich counties you are hunting.

Can't argue here in NC. For $25.00 we get (in my county) 2 buck tags and 196 doe tags.

Wow, something to be said for Texas and NC after all! ;):D All those deer for that little bit of money! In MN the standard license is right around $27, but only for an either sex deer. Depending on your zone and unit you can either take one antlerless, up to four antlerless or no antlerless for $14.50 a tag.

Iowa is $27 and you can get doe tags for $12. Landowner tags are $2. That is in addition to your hunting license and habitat fee.

If a tag is the only thing you buy to hunt then you are one lucky person. . .the tag is just the tip of the typical iceberg. I always need something else, camo, guns, packs, etc etc. What about those scouting trips in the off season. The cost for the Texas deer lease, ouch.:D:D

i am origanal from michigan and have family there with propertyand i own property in michigan....the out of state licence fee is crazy....276 dollars....i am used to spending the 30 dollars there...i just moved to ohio with my wife due to there is no auto jobs in michigan...anyways here in ohio you have to get a hunting licence 25 and then a deer tag 25 that adds like to 50 dollars....i know in mi and oh they are going to raise the price of tags in the next couple years....i dont have any where to hunt here in ohio close to me in lima so i was going to go to michigan to my property but to spend 150 in gas, 276 for tags and some other expenses(food) it looks like i might not be able to hunt this year.... :( the out of state fees are the ones that are crazy....30-50 dollars is not bad but when it is 100+ for a licence i might as well just buy a cow...lol...i agree the fees are driving people away from hunting...i know a few people who have stopped due to the fees...

I bought a lifetime license back in the late 70's or early 80's and haven't had to buy a tag since. Bought my son one when he was about 8 (he's now 25) and he's good to go too.Two of the best investments I ever made.

I don't know what the individual tags here in Oregon cost. I always get what they call the sports pac.

for 130 dollars you get your hunting and fishing license, and tags for steelhead, salmon, deer, elk, bear and cougar.

You can of course also apply for the controlled hunts and special hunts as well at additional fees.

Not a bad price for year round outdoor sporting.

Youve got to look at all the enjoyment we get out of it. In comparison look what it cost to take the littl lady out to eat and a movie, or just going down to the local pub for a couple of beers. For the amount of enjoyment I get out of a $24 Wi archery tag its well worth it. Now when you start talking about buying a out of state tag somewhere, thats a little different depending on where your going. Whole different debit there!

The disparity between resident and non resident is huge. Oregon general season deer tag 19.50 resident, non resident is 264.50, resident black bear 11.50 non resident is 151.50

The one that made me cringe is the bighorn sheep. resident 101.50 non resident is 1,083.50

sure seems like they don't want folks coming in from out of state. Personally I think this not only hurts hunting in general but local and state economy as well.

This is also my first year in TN, at Ft. Campbell. I'm from Arkansas, and they sell a Resident Sportsmans License for $25 (just small game is $10.50) that covers all small game and a total season limit of deer. It also covers you for modern gun, archery and muzzleloader at no additional charge. Here in TN, I have to payan extra $28for each different weapon. I didn't know I was so spoiled in Arkansas.

RE: The Cost of Deer Tags

To answer your question, it's Oklahoma. If you happen to be a resident, you can buy a lifetime hunting license, a lifetime fishing license or a combination. After that, all you ever have to buy is the Federal Duck Stamp if you shoot waterfowl or migratory birds. If you ever happen to move out of state, you can still hunt here for your lifetime. The money goes into a pool where they use the interest to buy public hunting land that all can use. I believe they have the same thing in Texas. I'm sure the costs have gone up, but if you are young or planning on living for a while, it pays off in money saved and goes for a good cause. You also don't have to forget about not having a license when the new year comes around. I bought a lifetime hunting only at first but I was crappie fishing with a buddy of mine just after the first of the year one time and realized that I had forgotten to buy my fishing license. We had to get the boat out of the water and go back to town to buy a license.
The end of that year, I bought a lifetime fishing to go with my lifetime hunting. Now I don't have to worry about my memory or loss of it. You should check with your individual states. There may be more opportunities like this in other states as well. It's pretty hard to come up with the money when you're young though. The lifetime licenses are usually pretty steep and take a few years to pay off. I bought my ex-wife one too. That was a waste but at least it went to a good cause. Maybe some people are getting to hunt on public land that I helped pay for.

I live in Indiana and my wife bought me a lifetime hunting about 15 years ago and I think the price was 450-500 dollars. It includes all your tags and bonus tags as well as your turkey stamp. It does not include federal bird stamp. You could also get hunting&fishing or just fishing or just hunting. Indiana quit the program for a while but I think you can get them again, but am not sure on that. To tag an animal you just fill out a slip of paper with your name, address, date and county of kill and your license number and attatch to the animal.

Texas has a lifetime license.

Oklahoma lifetime hunting license is $625. If you deer and turkey hunt it will pay in about 4 years. 6 deer tags x $20. hunting license $20, legacy fee $5, and 2 turkey tags x $10 = $165 / year. 165 x 4 = 660.

I think mine was $525 like 6 years ago. My Dad's was like $175 in the 80's.

I am very satisfied with mine.
