Deer hoof gun rack
Anyone know how to make one or can someone point me in the right direction. Is there websites or books or videos that show how it is done? We got a nice doe this weekend and my son wants us to make a gun rack or coat hook out of it.Thanks

RE: Deer hoof gun rack
theres a couple of ways to do it.
1: shin the feet and leg to the knee, get a foot form from a taxidermy supply house, clean the skin, put preservitive on it,sew the skin to the form and mt. on the panel you want.
2: take the feet and bend to the shape you want, put in a place where animals can't get at them for a couple mo's. when dry put on a panel like you want. they will go bad if not kept clean and sprayed at least one a year with a good bug spray.(this is the way they did them a loooooong time ago.) it works but not as good as skinning them.

remember keep your back to the sun, your knife sharp, and your powder dry.

Whatever you do, just make sure you remove all of the bone from the feet and preserve the hide (dry preserve or tan) otherwise you'll have a nasty, stinky mess on your hands.

I did that this year with my elk hooves, my grampa has been making them for years, just take and bend the legg in the shape you want and then let dry, take some hair shampoo and wash the fur and the hooves and then buff out the hoove. I've also seen the rump mounts my uncle had one made into a piggy bank, you can guess where the money slot is

The bones goes down and forms a knuckle in the hoof. You need to skin the leg down to the hoof, then cut it off at that knuckle. It can take some time to figure out the first one or two, but once you do it, you can cut and snap them off pretty easy. You'll be left with a piece of skin with a hoof at the end.
