How did you get that first deer?
 

Well, after many unsuccesful years (missing, falling asleep) last season i had the opportunity to take my very first deer. Now, i could have taken a doe every season but my Dad is dead set against that so its bucks only for us. I was sitting on a hill side and just about to leave the woods when i heard a rustling in the distance. I decided it was probably just a squirrel (like always) and started gathering my things to walk out of the woods. Then the rustling got louder, and from what i could tell was coming neer me. The next thing i knew i had a buck walking straight towards me from my left side. I clicked the safety off of my .243 and followed him in with my scope. When he hit about 40 yards he stopped and turned, showing me a perfect broad side, i assumed he was about to run up the very hill side i was sitting on so i took my shot. The shot struck the lung perfectly..being eager and not wanting to lose my buck, while he was running off i took a second shot which severed the spine and he was down for good. It was and is one of the best memories i have to date. Anyone else want totell their "first deer" story?

The day was 11/13/79, my brother an I had drug a wooden deer stand that we had built about 3/4'smile an placed on the side of a ridge. I had been watching the area. There were several scrapes an some rubs on some trees that were about 4 inchesin dia. I was sitting in the standabout 10 feet off the ground anhe came over the ridge about 0930. I shot him right square behind the shoulder an he ran past me an Ishot him again. He layed down about 100 yds away. I went home an got my mother an we drove the 1977 chevrolet pickup down to the area an loaded him up. He was an 8 pointeran stunk something terrible.

My first deer was one of the toughest animals ive ever seen. Someone had shot him about 2 miles away, and ripped open his guts, he ended up walking through the woods 2 miles to right under my stand, where i shot him with a dubble lung shot, and he still ran another 40 yards with his guts basiclly dragging on the floor, and a bullet in both lungs, i know he walked 2 miles cause i met the guy who shot him at first.

I was actually getting readyto leave, it was 11 am, i was with my dad and i saidto him lets go, hesaid lets wait 10 more minz, and 2 minz later he came.

!970 Jumped a Buck up.I was using a Single Shot12ga. with Slugs.I followed the Buck for a ways.Then back tracked to where I jumped him.Setting there seen him coming,got my Gun up took a Bead,pull the Hammer back,his ears go up,I pulled the trigger he goes down.He goes down and is kicking.I reload and close the Gun on my Coveralls.He is kicking and I'm trying to get loose.He gets up,I get loose,shoot again,drop him on a fence.

That was fun!

12 years old opening morning of a special youth anterless mule deer draw, group of deer passed through a saddle on their way to bed @ approx 100 yards. Took aim on a single doe that offered a clear broadside shot, squeezed the trigger and down she went. I followed that up 2 weeks later with my first whitetail buck and finished my first biggame hunting season later that week by taking a young bull moose, who just happened tostep out on a cut whiledad was relieving himself.:)

My dad and I were hunting over some milo stubble when I was 12(first year of deer hunting)and a little buck came out about 125 yards away. We were hunting withmy dad'sopen-sighted muzzleloader and a scoped 6mm that my uncle had suddenly decided to loan us that night. Anyway, I had the muzzleloader, so dad handed me the 6mm so I could shoot it when it turned broadside. Well, it turned.........and started coming straight at us. It kept coming closer and closer, until it was at 15 yards. It finally turned broadside and I shot it at 15 yards through a 3x scope.A little to close for a scope!!!:)Anyway, I got him, and you never saw a happier 12 year old!!!!

i started out into weopons and did not start hunting till i was in my 20's. i used to walk around on timber co. roads taking the gun for a walk.actually had a couple of shots but missed. i wanted to get serious and hooked up with a bow hunter, i practiced with my used bow and he put me on a hot stand .i arrowed a 4 pt, after that gun hunting was much easier after looking at it like a bow hunter.

My dad would carry me to a club in south Georgia to hunt. I think I was 12 when he let me sit in a stand by myself. The club was loaded with deer and my dad told me to takefill some doe tags.I sat on a popular club standon apowerline where I could see forever, only problem was I had a 12 gauge with buckshot (I didn't have a rifle back then). Two does came out on the food plot around 30 yds,I put the bead on oneand fired. The does I was shooting at broke and run, and the other just picked it head up. I immediately aimed and shot the other doe too, dropping her instantly.We looked for the first doe I shot at for over an hour, no blood ever found. Anyway, I was so proud of the one I got. I forgot to mention it was only a doe yearling, around 60 lbs

I started hunting at 15 in the 1986-1987 season. I went all season and finally on Jan 1, I killed a doe and on Jan 2, I killed a 135 class 9 pointer. The doe I was in a field that was well traveled and I made the shot running at 35 yards, with 00 buck. The next day I was on an old road and the buck walked out and stood at 40 yards. My son will be hunting with me this year and he is 8. I hope to report on his first deer soon.

The first deer I shot was a little tramatic for me. You see my dad had to threaten me with a beating to make me sit still long enough. all Season long I would sit for about 20 minutes and think I had been sitting forever. I'd climb down go tromping through the woods toward My fathers stand. I'd show up and he'd be pissed.

"What in the world are you doing walking around at 7:30 am? You fool this is the best time to be hunting!"

"Well, I thought that I should come see if you had got one!"

thats how it went for the whole season. Untill the last day, Dad sat me down and told me that if I got out of the stand before he came back to get me that He would not only beat me until I couldn't still down, but I wouldn't be allowed to hunt next year.

So there I sit sniffling, Thinking:
" 'he was the biggest jerk ever created. Time crept by, It seemed like days and weeks I sat in that stand. I just Knew dad had left the country and wasn't coming back. If he was coming back for me he would have been here by now. It had to be after noon. OH he's lost his mind and abandoned me for sure."

'Wait, whats that sound! It sounds like someone's tromping through the woods to me. Dad has finally returned, No its a deer...... A huge deer. Better shoot this is the world's record deer for sure......BANG Down flops The world's record single spike. No not your everyday ordinary spike with one on both sides, but a truely original monster spike with only One 4 inch spike.:D shortly after Dad finally showed up after walking to my stand when he heard the shot. I grabbed his arm and looked at the watch and it was 9:15 am.;) OBTW I was 12.

I was in Southern Illinois and scouted a plot of property. I found the only climbable tree in the place and made my stand there. Next morning, a 8 point buck walks directly underneath me. The angle was really screwy, so I had to wait to take the shot, which was a kill. Probably could have stabbed him instead of shooting!!!

All-in-all, it was entirely too easy and not very much fun - not much of a hunt at all.

i was 14, and a small 6 point walked out. i was hunting w/ a 30-30 open sights, had 6 bullets in it. i shot the 1st shot and the buck didnt move, think he was in shock. shot 4 more time and still he didnt move. final shot i was thinkin man i have to get it w/ this 1. bang.....he drops on the spot. after that day i will never hunt a deer w/ open sights again. i have yet to hear of a deer do what that buck did. (stand there and look at me like "what the hell are you doing")

Walking down an old logging road when he ran out of the woods. He crossed the road about 25 yards ahead of me and went into the big ditch beside the road. As he went up the far side, I fired and hit him in the back of the neck, just below the head. Was using an old Marlin .44-40 sadlegun.

At the ripe 'ol age of 47 I finally got my first dear after 24 years of military duty that kept me out of the states most of my life.

Hunt was a still hunt in Northern Virginia, the day after Thanksgiving, 2006.

Saw what I thought was a doe coming down the hillside opposite the hilliside I was on. Drew a bead on the deer with my Marlin 30-30, standing, offhand, at approximately 50yards, tried to lead the dear as it walked--i didn't think of making a noise to make it stop--and shot. Hit the deer in the neck and dropped it like a sack of potatoes.

Climbed down my hill, hiked up the other side,and found out that I had shot a button buck and not a doe. Not the best choice, but it was my first dear.

Going to try blind hunting this year with a bow and see if my luck holds out and I can get a doe or a buck (a real one this time) with my bow the first year out.

Back in 93 my first deer hunting experience - I was hunting with an old friend near some property of his - I was dressed in brown coveralls with a blue stretch hat much like the skin tight underarmor wear - not much on camo back in the days but I figured not much would take place and I would enjoy a handpicked spot near a cedar - relax and enjoy the sun come up and let my breath filter through the morning sunshine. Around day break I could hear leaves crunching behind me just a few steps - I though squirrel? I was hunting with my dads 35 rem so I positioned the gun to my left so I could just ease it up for an easy shot if it was not a squirrel. Well, I could not resist the pressure so I peaked over my left shoulder and there stood a huge buck (less than 10 feet)- being fresh to the hunting world I thought it was a descent buck - As it would happen the buck moved off to my left from behind me - all I could see was rack walking away - so what did I do - I followed the deer throught the woods probably 30 yards watching him - he would step - I would step - he crested a hill and I double timed it to the crest when he disappeared over the top - When I approached the crest he was about 30 yards down hill - I positioned the rifle between two trees and shot - he went down - I told my friend who was hunting with me that day I would just keep the horns. He had this crazy look on his face - the buck scored in the high 150's - imagine that for a beginner - 14 years later - I take another buck in the 150's - Camo - Shooting sticks - scent bombs - you name it I have it - first time - brown coveralls and a 35 remington - go figure!

First time I actually shot a deer was when my dad told me to finish off one of his that was on the ground wounded with a hit to the spine. Head shot did it.

My first actual deer was when I was 13. I finally got to sit in a stand by myself. I had hunted a 180 acre plot of land almost every day and saw nor hair nor limb of a deer and no one else hunting there did either. Last day of the season we had about 40 people do a drive while my dad and I sat in stands. Well about 10 minutes into the driving I see legs moving into the woods and soon a deer comes running across this narrow shooting lane we had. My gun was up so I quick eased off the safety, followed (not lead) the deer and shot. Turns out my shot ended up in the back half of the deer but it dropped like brick. My first deer was a nub buck, but it was a deer and i was proud as heck. By the way, the drivers were actually going in the complete opposite direction. I guess I got the dumb one[8D]

Well it was just last year. I am 28 and just started hunting. My dad was never the big outdoors type.

Anyway I took a week off during Jan (rut peak in AL) the last day we went in about 0400. I sat on the ground facing a pine thicket until about 0900. My buddy sat about 400-500 yrds off to my right. Well I got bored and walked over and we stood there talking and just hanging out. Well all the sudden he gets the crazy look on his face. " Dude don't move." Why? "There is a deer behind you." Now my buddy is a joker but sure enough about 100 yrds down the feild stood a doe working her way around a big pine tree. Well I had to sit there for what seemed like forever waiting on her to come aorund the other side of the tree. Finally she did but looked up directly at me. I aimed at her head and squeezed. A miss! She didn't move....my buddy was scream whispering "shoot her again, shoot her again!!" LOL She took two steps to her right and I shot her right behind her shoulder. She fell two yards away. Awesome!! Can't wait for my first buck.

At the age of 38 (last year) I was able to take my first deer.

I was hunting with a friend of mine at my in-laws place and we had found a place that we thought would be ideal. Unfortunately it wasn't and was spotted by the first doe that was coming through. We decided that we would try to sit up at the house and glass the area to see how the deer were moving during the day.I looked at the area where we were that morn and therewas a smallbuck. My buddy asked are you gonna take it and I said that I was. We stepped out, about 20 feet from the front door and set up. I was so nervous that when I fired I thought that Imissed him. But,only a second later he dropped where he was standing. Ihit him in with a neck shot and didn't have to worry about chasing.

well my first deer was last year i was 12 and was hunting wit a remington semi auto 12 ga. me and my uncle went out at like 5 a.m he was sleeping, i was listening and watching next thing i know its 6 now and just starting to get light i hear something coming across the creek in the next treeline over i watch the 6 point till its bout 20 yards away then BAM he was at 3/4 i shot him in the neck and he ran 40 yards and dropped dead!

I passed up a small 5 pointer that was injured opening day of gun season last year (first year of hunting) my buddy saw him and let him walk thinking it would be a perfect buck for me since he hurt. I let him walk and i have no idea why, from there on i decided if its brown its down and it took probably another 20 hunts before i even saw another deer i finally shot a doe and ended having to finish the job from 5 feet away, what an experience.

Got my first a couple of years ago with my muzzle loader. It was the day after Christmas, getting close to the end of the season. I was on the ground behind a medium size tree along a deer path. At a few minutes before dusk, a buck and doe came walking up the path. The doe figured out I was there, and bolted one way, the buck the other. The buck stopped running right in my shooting lane and took a look at me, took my shot.

The wind started picking up, and by the time I got to the spot, the blood trail on the leaves was almost completly blown away. I gave up looking until morning. The next morning, I dragged lefty26 out with me to look for my deer. After a minute or two of looking, he yells "here's your deer". It had run a few yards, then had fallen over a small cliff and died. It had a couple of bites out of its haunches, but still got a good bit of meat from it, have its antlers mounted.

My first deer....wellI hunted for 2 years and only had close encounters or just bad misses. I had hunted from the start of bow season last year and had not had any luck. Opening day of rifle season came and I got in my stand early and I had a little 5 pointer walk through. He spooked and I was still out of a deer. Later that night I gave it one more try. I hunted from 2 oclock and hadnt seen a stinkin' thing then I looked up and seen a little doe(at least I thought)getting a drink from the creek. It walked about 25 yards from my stand and I shot it and droppped it in its tracks. Come to find out it was a button buck, but I was still happy.:)

I got mine 5 years ago during gun season. I was on 80 acres of public land and decided to try still hunting because I had no deer come anywhere near my stand for 3 days. About 5 mins before shooting light was gone, I heard a deer moving to my left through some thick brush. I figured he was headed towards the trail I was still hunting. Sure enough, he was and he popped out 10 yds in front of me. He ended up being a she but I could've cared less because I had tags for both. I sent a rifled 20 gauge slug through her lungs and she dropped in her tracks. I carried that deer back 3/4 of a mile to my van and got her back to my house and walked in. I forgot completely that I was covered in blood from carrying the doe fireman style through the woods. My wife thought I had hurt myself and I had to calm her down while trying to tell the story of my first deer. What a night!

Well my first Buck was a story. We got this new lease in Alabama and we are from Louisiana. I had gone in and missed a buck with my bow just the week before. So opening morning of gun I am up in a home made climber I built myself and day break comes along and here is the very same deer I just missed a week before walking my way. He was only a spike but hell I never shot a buck before. When he gets about fifty yards away, I take the shot and he runs straight at me and falls right under me at about 10 yards. Well he refused to die and kept trying to get up. Had to shoot again then climb down to get em. It was a bitter/sweet first deer. Since then I consentrate on a clean accurate shot. That was twenty years ago.

My first deer a 10 1/2 inch spike came in 1973-My dad drooped me off beside a tree-told me to stand still--He went around the other side of this thicket to squirell hunt -before daylight heard some deer come by grunting--couldn't see them--I wanted to rattle so dad gave me two peices of dall rod to beat together--After daylight i beat them and within 20 minutes he slipped in,an I shot him--Did I call him in,I don't know but it was fun!!!

Venison was the number one meat on the farm. It was back in 1972 and my grandfather said to go out behind the grainery and harvest a big doe. He gave me a single shot .22 and 2 rounds. I had been sitting for only 20 min. when 2 big does came to about 30 yards. I head shot one of them and that was my day. It really wasn't hunting back then, it was just getting meat for the family.
