I planted a small patch of them last year, white topped purples, the deer didn't touch them until January, then they decimated them. Go figure...

I had 3 acres of turnips and collards right next to one of my deer stands, and they never touched them before the end of deer season. Even then I think it was just a little browse feed to them, because they had a trail beat through them that looked likea cow trail.

A guy I work with told me I will need to plow the turnips about mid november to expose the roots .

Hmmmmmm...?Have you ever pulled up a turnip....not much of a root to a turnip,just a small root coming out from the very bottom of it?Not sure the deer would be interested in it at all.I leave the turnips all fall and pick the larger ones as needed then leave the rest all winter for the deer.Another thing to plant is foraging oats or winter wheat...it will be there for the deer all fall and winter and will come up in the spring for the birds and turkeys.

ya thay work really good thay hold deer in your plots but thay help the deer make in the winter too but you need cold winters

Turnips are in the brassacuss family. All brassicus' need a good frost to sweeten the greens. They are a late season food source. They are not a very good attractant to hunt over during the hunting season. Add them to your winter wheat and oats plots. The wheat will be a good attractant and the turnips will provide much needed food during the winter months for your deer herd.
